Replacing Only One Tire?

Had some steering wheel vibrations while at speed, assumed it was a balancing issue, took it to Costco and they found a piece of scrap metal that's too close to the sidewall to be repairable, tires are still within warranty so I purchased a new tire at a prorated price, I asked the employee if this was going to be an issue since it's a 4WD and they stated no. I've searched on here and have gotten mixed opinions.

I have an 03' 4Runner V8, so it's full time 4WD, but I also read since it technically has a open diff (lsd torsen?) that it's okay if the tires are slightly mismatched? I also read that it just has to be within a certain tread depth (my tires are at 10/32nds currently, the specs state they start at 12/32nds, so it may be okay since it's only 2/32nds). I thought the employee would've told me to replace all 4 or at least 2 of them, but that was not said. I know Tire Rack can shave your tire too, but since it was prorated, I only paid $40.

You're over thinking it, no worries with that little bit of difference.

Just wanted to confirm, don't want to be in for a costly repair if I can prevent it. Thank you.

This more applies to like running an undersized spare with a full time awd system. Or a tire that's bald with a brand new one. Your difference is so minimal (2/32) it won't make a difference.

The reason it matters in those instances is because of the rotation of the axles/gears in the diff being affected by the radius of the tire. They can break.

Second the advice above. for $40 Id have taken the new tire too. Had there not been a warranty usually people are selling tires on here, facebook groups, craigslist or you could even try bestusedtires.com
