I have a 2007 4Runner SR5, and love it, but want to upgrade. The new prices are affordable, and I finally drove a new SR5 4WD yesterday. I really like it, and am just trying to get some pro's and con's on here.
I have never owned a 4WD, and have really wanted one for several years. My fear has always been the maintenance, and upkeep (if there is any).
I have been really frustrated with getting rid of the V8 and moving down to the 6, but it felt very good, and I was not let down with the performance. I may try and see if I can afford a premium or limited, to get the passenger electric seat. Imoprtant to the wife.

It might be small, but I am wondering what the heck happened, and why Toyota left out the locking fuel door............
I am still scratching my head on that one.

im in the same dilemma too, but i was looking at the lexus gx460 premium models.

Same v6 engine they’ve since late 05/06 and same transmission. Slightly bigger body, slightly nicer interior (but you can upgrade this yourself with a fraction of a new vehicle cost)

4x4 is easy. Engage it periodically so the actuators don’t freeze. Consider changing diff fluids after 30k miles or so. Don’t overwork the 4x4 by towing

The biggest obvious con is the monthly payment. You could just add electrically adjustable seats to the one you have and if you haven't needed 4WD before, many you still don't need it.

Personally, I would be waiting for a 6th gen to come out before purchasing a 5th gen. I doubt there will be one in 2021, unless it comes out at the end of the year as a 2022 model. It seems Toyota 4x4s are worth buying new since they hold value so well and you can often get a lower APR on new than on 2-4 year old preowned. At the end of the day the numbers work out about the same.

Im with waiting for a newer gen to come out. The 5th gen platform is about 10 years old right now.

Toyota is going to have to compete with the new Bronco and they might do that with a second face lift of the 5th gen, a 6th gen or knocking the price down a bit more.

I know this is a T4R forum but that new bronco is packed full of features that I think makes it a better rig to 4x4.

Pro: It's a 5th gen

Con: It's not a 4th gen

This is the part I'm not really understanding. Aren't all V8 4Runners full-time 4WD?

Prices might seem good on a 2020 right now but the 6th generation is right around the corner. Wait until the 6th gen is released and the 2020 prices will fall even further when it's no longer the latest generation.

Actually, I am getting a real good deal due to Toyota wanting to get rid of the 2020's and make room for the 2021. I get what you are saying, but the 20201's will be out and ready to go mid Sept.

It looks like I will be getting the 2020 either today or Tues (start of the month).
They gave me a SUPER deal on a SR5 Premium. I think it will be a much needed upgrade.

Biggest con is your buying a 10 year old design with 10 year old antiquated technology. There is absolutely no way I would buy a new 5th gen, when you can buy a used one with lower miles at a significant discount as compared to new. The 6th gen is more than likely on the horizon, so holding out for that would be ideal. If you can't pitch the itch to get something new, look for a few year old model and do yourself a financial favor.

Pro: You have the cash to write a check and be done.
Con: You have to finance a $45,000 vehicle for 5-7 years.

This, plus the newness wears off very quickly. Just remember, that “new” vehicle becomes “used” the day you drive it off the lot and plummets in value quickly. The only real advantage to buying brand new is financing options are more favorable with lower interest. If paying cash, then that doesn’t matter, but most people aren’t positioned to do that with a $45k vehicle. Best value is probably one that’s a year or two old with 10-12k miles on it if you can pay cash, or get a good finance rate.
