How to check oil level?

Anyone else have difficulty with this? Just got a 2007 and changed the oil. I can see oil but not clear where it is at on the stick. my 1999 was easy peasy to see.

Any tricks to see oil level?

Its a pain in the butt with fresh clear oil. The dip stick (at least on the 4.0) bends twice, which wipes oil off of both sides. Try different clocking angles of the stick as it goes in and pulling from different angles. It usually takes me a few tries, you're not alone lol.

Once it gets that light iced tea color to the oil, its not too bad to read

I use a black sharpie on the stick to see the oil level better.

Sounds silly, but lighting is really important. I had a lot of trouble reading the dip stick until I finally installed some brighter LED lights in my garage.

Other tips:
  • Make sure you wipe the dip stick before taking a measurement
  • Look at both sides of the dipstick. One side is usually smudged for me.
  • Some recommend roughing up the dipstick with some sandpaper. I haven't dont this, so can't personally recommend.
