4runner camper top?? Crazy?

I mean, why not get a Tacoma at this point for a camper conversion, but I have seen Jeep camper tops with holes to get into the top from the inside.

I could fabricate this, cut a hole in the roof somewhere and be good.

I like the idea of having a spot to stand, a spot to sleep that doesn't take up the bottom area as well as plenty of storage for bicycle/skis/paddleboard/guitar/cats. Maybe the cats will be gone by the time this becomes real.

There are some cool pickup conversions, and roof tents, but I have yet to see a pass-through version.

"4runner camper top?? Crazy?"

In a word, yes. LOL. I could see it being functional but it's really kinda ugly. It seems like it would make the runner kind of top heavy. I think the only way I'd consider something like that was if A. it was easy to attach and remove, and B. you could access it through the sunroof opening. Cutting a hole in the top is a no go for me.

From a safety perspective your best bet would to be to install a poptop like a Westfalia, or a lower profile raised roof like some of the Land Cruiser 60s have. That top on that picture might fly off if you ever crash into something unless it could be welded to the body some how.

yea ugly for sure.. It would be scary to cut through without already having a sunroof that could be dismantled.
I suppose a pop-top could work. The sides and back could be insulated as well if need-be. Maybe it was just a bad thought.

Anything is possible with the right fabrication skills/tools. I remember this thread from a couple years ago. The guy built this insane cab/camper type thing on the back of a 3rd gen. Looked pretty cool too.

The Jeep tops are lightweight fiberglass and pop up. Jeeps also have the passthrough already with the removable roof. I’d think you’d have to use fiberglass or something lightweight to keep the vehicle safe. A lot of the homemade fab stuff from sprinter vans to cab over campers tend to be very heavy and made with Home Depot type materials instead of proper lightweight rv type materials. Good luck!
