2005 4runner needs evaporator. What should I do?

The AC evaporator failed this week on my 2005 4runner (150,000 miles). "Beat the Heat" (Nassau Bahamas) repaced the Amazon.com new Denso compressor I bought them two years ago for $200, and I was cool for two year - without any recharge. The installation cost me $200.

Here's my question. A Denso evaporator for my 4runner is $110 shipped to Denver where I can pick it up and bring it to Bahamas - where I live. I have family in Denver.

"Beat the Heat" want $800 to install it (dash comes out, etc.). The tech gave the AC a "charge" and said listen here by the ACvent by the driver's SW, and you could hear the "hiss" from behind the dash. They have a dozen techs and been doing only auto AC for long time (25 years?) Cars are lined up all day - every day!.

The Toy dealer here in Nassau wanted $1200 for the evap., and then called back and said they don't work on cars over 10 years old. I bought the 4runner new from them in 2005.

Amazon says this is the right part for my car.

Amazon.com: Denso 476-0040 A/C Evaporator Core: Automotive

DENSO IS THE OE SUPPLIER FOR THIS APPLICATION, NEW EVAPORATOR CORE

If you're replacing the evaporator, you should also replace the heater core which is in the same housing, if you don't and the heater core starts leaking you will have to pay the same price again to replace the heater core.

Gotchya! Thanks.

Is there any way to cut the heater core out completely or have the techs shut it off permanently when they replace the evaporator? We never need heat here in Bahamas. Also. Doesn't look like I could get a HC in a suitcase.

BTW. The Denso Compressor they installed two years ago was made in China. Works great so far!

CARdid has it for cheap. gpd(R) 8231543 - HVAC Heater Core

This evaporator core for my 4runner was $40 less. Which one would you order?

Out with the old in with the new, same size. Perfect fit on my 2010 FJ Cruiser. I compared it with the denso that was removed and I can say had same quality weight look and feel. AC is very cold now. Recommended

Haven't looked specifically on our runners but typically you can disconnect the two heater hoses under the hood and put a nipple in between them forming a loop so the coolant never makes it to the heater core. I'd look at it and if that's possible, and you never need heat, I'd just leave it alone until it fails, (if ever) and then bypass it like that. Funny that they had you listen to the hissing sound. Was that with the engine running and the a/c on? Because mine hisses like that every time the expansion valve opens or closes and thankfully right now it's not leaking. Someone else on here referred to it as, "my car is breathing" lol. But in your case if the freon's low it probably is the evaporator like they said.

Engine was not running. Tech just charged the AC line with hose/compressor.
Good advice on the heater core. I'm going to leave it out.

BTW. Here's a evap.core for $50 less at Amazon. Brotherinlaw said you need special tools for Denso.
UAC looks like a good supplier for EC.

Considering the labor cost, I'd only use an OEM part. Although a vendor may supply the OEM part to Toyota, that doesn't mean the aftermarket part offered by the same vendor is the same quality as the part they supply to Toyota.

Just spoke to the tech at the AC place. He said if I bring him the denso evap. ($110) at Amazon, he’ll install it for $300. There is a video of a mechanic taking outa 2000 4runner evap without taking down the dash.
He removes the glove box toget to the evaporator.

This Florida tech goes though the glove box to take out the evaporator core and doesn't take out the entire dash.

part 2 (NO dash- through glove box removal only) 2000 Toyota 4 runner AC Evaporator replacement part two - YouTube
