What is this rusting line?

Front of 2007 4runner, on the bottom behind the radiator? Transmission line?

note am in process of de-rusting, that's all the white stuff.

Looks like the transmission cooling lines. There should be a second one routed pretty closely to it. These are known to rust out.

What’s your rust treatment plan? I’m about to do the same on my ‘08 (I live in Chicago, so lots of salt)

I don't see a 2nd one, I wonder if it's A/C line.

It just started to take the paint off and brackets quite rusted. I'm using POR 15 prep stuff all over it, taking down the rust as much as possible, then 2 coats of por15 should hold it for as long as I have it...I hope. I did this on 99 4runner and worked in general except where rust took off again but I wasn't as patient that time. I'm also trying some other rust eater products to remove rust which are working but slow...gotta keep it wet. It's a mess because the bolts and brackets are rusted in place. Quite rewarding to see the rust disappear though... Key thing is to check all the lines, I just noticed a bubble in a break line and other lines as noted. Always keep a spare 4runner around while working on de-rusting your 4runner...lol

you'd think it swam across the atlantic, but it's just road salt and neglect

just something to keep in mind on the por15, i have used it quite a few times in different situations when restoring old cars, it is not intended to be applied over existing paint or coatings, its specifically designed to be applied over rusted or properly prepped bare metal. por stands for paint over rust. when applied to paint ed surfaces its only as strong as the paint under it, & even on bare metal it can & will flake off sooner than expected or advertised.

there are much better ways to coat the frame or any metal, eastwood makes a rust coating similar to por15 that most people say works better but still isnt designed for painted surfaces. i would look into a epoxy primer & use a quality automotive paint. or for coating painted areas & even rusted or bare metal good ol rustoleum brush on paint or the industrial version works very good. i live in iowa which has just as much snow/salt as almost any other northern state & rustoleum has lasted as long or longer than some por applications ive done.

nothing wrong with using por, just be aware of the correct way to use it & dont expect permanent results. also its not UV resistant & will turn a ugly greyish chalky color after a couple years if not properly top coated with a paint. all in all, ive got away from por.

Not to derail this thread, but I'm going to be doing some rustproofing. Similar to you, I started with POR, but ended up deciding not to go down that route.

Any thoughts on eastwood rust encapsulator platinum? Claims you can paint over bare metal. Started a thread on this a few days ago. I want to tread my frame.

One is the power steering return line and two others are the transmission cooler lines (in/out to trans). Mine were rusting out, all three of them...so I removed the hard line connection and ran new rubber transmission hoses for each.

from what ive heard in the body shop world & reviews ive read the eastwood encapsulator is as good or better than por, & the new better platinum stuff is supposed to be better than the original version. just be sure to follow directions on the can & it should work pretty good.

but for the price of these types of coatings (por is like $40/qt) i prefer the rustoleum paint, it is very tough & easy to apply & lasts as long or longer than por & is easy to touch up & costs about $5-10 for a qt.

We replaced ours with copper nickle brake lines. We used the existing connectors and flared the tubes.
