Fuel removal...

I need to replace my rear brake lines and gas tank straps. The gas tank is almost full but I can't drive it out cause the brake lines burst. What's the best way to remove the fuel. I tried a siphon hose but it's a long way from the filler to the gas tank.

Get a small transfer pump. Many different types at your local auto store or hardware store.

Multi-Use Transfer Pump

And put tube down the filler cap? I suppose a smaller tube might do better but the siphon tube did not want to make it to the tank from the filler cap.

You could also disconnect the fuel tank main tube and use your electric fuel pump to get close to empty.

I just checked the manual and it literally just says, "drain fuel" as one of the steps which is not very helpful. The manual and the exploded views I am looking at don't show a fuel tank drain plug.

I've never tried this, but if you can find an easy disconnect of the return line between the engine and tank just turn on the engine and let the fuel pump do the work.

I found a band clamp near the tank where I could disconnect the hose. Am siphoning now. We'll see how close to empty I can get.

It was a bit time consuming cause the tank was almost full, but I got most of the fuel out. Luckily I had 3 empty cans and could dump some in another car when I was filling another one. I was also able to thread a nylon strap under the gas tank so I can remove the skid plate.

So our 2010 4runner Trail is in our garage and not going back on the road until the parts come in for the brake line repairs. The truck was brought in to the dealer for an oil change, they said the truck was unsafe to drive. Our brake lines looked a bit worse than yours. Any hints/suggestions that you could share from your repair work?

I was able to lower the fuel tank to replace the brake lines that go from the middle of the car to just before the axel. The mounts for the rest of the brake lines were so rusted I couldn't remove them without cutting them out and so I decided that if im going to keep this car, I'm going to let someone with more skills do it. I had to drill one of the gas tank mounting bolts out and just replace it with a nut and bolt.

There is also a hole rusted in the rear frame, the serpentine belt snapped over the winter, and probably numerous other repairs that are needed. I havent been able to let the car go but I'm probably going to.
