Off-Road Lighting Project

Got the off-road lighting project underway today by installing the Rigid 10” light bar in the hood scoop location. Mounting bracket purchased from C4 Fabrications. Also had a 30” Baja Designs S8 installed in the lower valence.

I had a local shop do the install and haven’t had a chance to look at how it’s mounted but I’m very pleased with the esthetics. The S8 is recessed far back enough that it could have been mounted without cutting the valence but I decided to get the full exposure - and I’m not disappointed.

I am a bit disappointed with the performance of the Rigid spot. The difference between the Rigid and the S8 is substantial - and not just due to the volume of lights in the S8. The Rigid is a spot and the S8 is a driving/combo pattern. The throw is really weak compared to the S8, and not just because of the length discrepancy.

Ditch lights are already wired and ready to mount a pair of BD Squadron Sports as soon as the brackets arrive. I'll be replacing the OEM fog lights with a pair of round BD Squadron SAE amber as soon as I figure out how I want to mount them in that location. I also plan to add a pair of BD LP4s to the front bumper but that may have to wait until I upgrade the bumper. I'm currently looking for a way to mount them on top of the OEM bumper above the lower valence but haven't seen anyone mount off-road lights in that location so there must be some challenges that make it impractical. Open to suggestions if anyone has some.

I had a C-4 hood scoop light on my to-do list as well.

Which Rigid light fixture did you get?
They have the SR series with sub-choices, and the SR2 series, also with sub-choices.
So I think there's a total of about 7-8 different choices for the Rigid.

This shows them all in action and the differences were pretty drastic between them, depending on your beam needs.

Baja > All

Also, for mounting the Squadrons in the factory pockets you can use this Ford/Toyota, F-150, Tundra, Tacoma Fog Light Kit. You simply drill one new hole on each side of the bumper, and hook the connector up backwards to reverse the polarity. It will work on your factory fog switch. I did it this https://www.toyota-4runner.org/2973768-post36.html way, credit to @YetiX .

Do you get glare off your hood from the hood scoop light?

Very nice.

The lower bumper is my favorite location for a front firing lights... it yields the best viewing experience when you keep the glare and spill off the hood and windshield.

I ordered the SR-series Pro (spot). It's the only one that fits in the scoop.

https://www.rigidindustries.com/sr-s...sr-series.html

Specs indicate output at 7900 lumens translating to about 1400 lux at 10 ft. It doesn't seem that bright. I'll get photos tonight of the throw for both light bars.

*FYI - that video is from 2014 and way out of date for their current product line. They only have the SR Series Pro now, but available in different throw patterns. As indicated, I got the "spot" which is the most appropriate for that location.

I saw that thread and it's not bad. I'm trying to figure out how to make it look more factory like you see with the 5th gen 4Runners. I talked my buddy into ordering OEM pods and he's going to work on fabricating a mounting bracket for the BD Squadron series lights. Might have a new option for these lights in a month or so.

Wellsir, I thank you for knocking one to-do off the list.
I'll go with something larger in the lower bumper instead then.

You bet. I bought the brackets from Rago Fabrication. It looks like they're no longer making them, but still have some in stock. I would assume once they're sold out that's the last you'll see of this particular bracket. I'll get some photos this week.
