I was taking my son to school this morning; just driving along the highway as normal when suddenly I heard a fairly rapid popping sound. Almost like a machine gun. It lasted about 5 seconds. It was loud enough to hear it well with the windows up.
From the best I can tell, the sound as coming from the rear, maybe in the rear diff area. Freaked me out for a second, but I was able to drive on to school and back home with no issue. It didn't make the sound again. Didn't seem to affect the operation of the vehicle at all, but I wanna say there seems to be more vibration in the steering wheel (maybe unrelated).
Any ideas what it might be? Or some possible sources to check?
I realize this is kind of a vague description, but any advice would be much appreciated!

Wondering if could be the 4wd making racket. It has been beeping in 4Lo even tho I’m pretty sure I was shifting into 4Lo correctly. It didn’t beep tonight. Heck, maybe I fixed something lol
