Does anyone have any cons they have with the system? Planning on pickin one up to replace my 220K oem. Hoping for a slight upgrade.

If you’re talking about TRD OffRoad from a Tacoma, I’ve read on here the front end rides real nice. Though rear suspension is a bit soft. Makes sense I guess considering the 4Runner has a lot more weight in the rear compared to the Tacoma. I’m considering doing this myself and adding FJ Springs and some spacers to the rear

I have a 2009 “Urban Runner” that came w XREAS, and to replace everything from Toyota to stock was going to be almost 4K in parts only. I got the bilstein trd pro suspension from the Toyota parts counter for around 1200 bucks. W coils and hardware. With a little bit of fabricating, a lift and simple hand tools it went on and I have had zero issues since. The 5th gen is a much heavier vehicle than the 4th and going from XREAS to a trd pro suspension felt very similar. I think it’s a great choice.

The difference between 4th and 5th gens are around 500lbs.

TRD Pro has a pretty nice setup with remote resis and 2.5 fronts so it's a substantial upgrade comparing to stock. TRD off road on the other hand has pretty much exactly the same setup as the base model and in my opinion only worth upgrading to if there will be little to no off-road use.

Just put a set of take offs Shocks and Springs from a 2020 TRD premium onto my 2006 SE V6 4wd. I took off the xreas shocks and plumbing. The ride is much better on the street very smooth now. Bumps that would throw me around are very tame. Speed bumps in parking lots, are not harsh. Freeway is super smooth, a little more body lean than before. I have not gone off road with it but I only go down dirt roads and such to campgrounds and lake sides. The cost was $300.00 and they had approx 5,000 miles on them. With Xreas gone I can get some Rock Sliders and maybe some off road tires and do some more trails.

Have you seen 500 extra lbs in a 4 runner that isn’t people? It’s significant. if you don’t account for the extra weight and then add a couple people you could easily bc under sprung for the weight, or over sprung and have a very stiff ride. I wasn’t going to assume that he was using it for anything but daily driving. So yea, I’d say it’s a much stronger spring.

I roll my eyes every time I read this b/c I have only ever seen one person express this opinion & plenty (including me) who actually have the TRD Offroad setup from the Tacoma and find the rear rides great. My post with install & ride experience (on road & off) is linked in my sig.

Kind of related, kind of unrelated. You can get a set of 5100s for $399 on Bilstein Lifts at the moment. I get that'd be a much better ride than some take offs.

Tylerdh: To put on the rear shocks I had to drill out the hole in the frame for the shock to fit. I got a step drill from harbor freight and used the 1 inch size. After that everything fit right in. The coils for the rear were the same length but more coils. It lifted the back 1/2 inch. The front lifted 1 inch. I still have a rake but I will put a 2 inch spacer (1 inch thick) in front and call it good.

FrothyLlama: I thought about the Billstien 5100's. The fact that I got new springs and shocks for $300 was what did it for me. Plus only 5,000 miles on them. The guy I bought them off of, put about 4 grand worth of new suspension on in his brand new 2020. For me it was a good deal. I saw take offs for more and passed them up because they were not worth it.

I went to an offroad shop and gave them $100 for a full set of 2019 Tacoma TRD Off Road front Struts and Springs and rear shocks and UCA's with 2500 miles on them AND they threw in the 2019 4Runner TRD Off Road full suspension (front/rear shocks, front/rear springs). they were just going to throw it away, but i said i would take it to see if the rears fit.
I dont want to drill out the frame incase i want to change the rear shocks later down the road. I think i will just do the Tacoma front struts and springs (approx 2" of lift) with Tacoma rear shocks with the 5th gen 4Runner springs (approx 1/2" of lift). hopefully that will all work out. not bad for $100 plus misc parts.

I thought about changing the rears out later too. I figured if I want bilsteins I would just buy them for a 5th gen and put them on.

are the front struts from a 2021 4runner trd the same as the tacoma struts? i want to put them on my 03 and take xreas off, hoping to gain 1-2" of lift in front?
my friend lifted his 21 4runner at 1000 miles, i can buy his struts, rear shocks and rear coils, wondering how much of that i can put on my 03 when i take xreas off?
tia!

so the 2021 4runner shocks and struts are tokico, the struts are complete with springs, would this be a good upgrade for my 03 or should i try to find some tacoma take offs with the factory bilstiens?
if i put these struts and the rear coil springs from the 21 what kind of gain would i see in ride height?
