Question My T4R Locked Me Out??

A weird thing happened to me today, I had a friend with a T4R SE come by that wanted to hear and see the mods on my T4R.

So I unlocked it, started the engine and popped the hood so they could see the mods.

After I closed the drivers door with the hood open and the engine on, the door locked on me.

So picture this the engine is on, we have no clue how it locked. I removed the EFI fuse to turn engine off thinking the door will unlock but no luck there.

So next I called my wife to do that cell phone trick with the remote but that did not work, I found out after testing it out on my friends T4R, if the key is in ignition and turned to on position the remote does not work at all.

Finally gave up and called for tow truck to open it up.

Anyone have this ever happen to them?

I thought the doors would not lock until it is put into gear?

Happy Fourth of July guys and gals.

I just checked my owners manual and it didn't say anything about a timed lock. Guess it's true that you learn something you every day.

I'm assuming that you've not added an aftermarket alarm. Our Camry has one that locks the doors after 40 seconds.

I do have a two way paging remote start alarm but it is set not to auto alarm. Also there was no chirps that it armed.

Yeah, it should only lock itself based on either a gear setting (shifting out of Park) or by speed (about 12 mph).

The front doors also should never lock if you press the lock button while the door is open and the key is on; it will automatically unlock if you do that. The only way to lock the door from the outside while it's running is to turn the key in the driver's door lock.

if you have an aftermarket alarm it could have just burped up or something and just did the unlocking out of some confusion.

Try it again, but this time, leave a window open.

See if it keeps happening..

It shouldn't/won't lock the doors with the keys in the ignition and any door open. Toyotas with auto locks have been that way for many years.

If I were pointing fingers, they would be at the aftermarket alarm.

I'd agree that the aftermarket alarm is your culprit. I just did you a favor and tried it on my truck, hood prop'd, engine on, window open, doors shut, and nada.... no lockout.

Aftermarket alarm caused the problem. Take it back to be fixed and ask for the cost of the tow service!

As much as i agree wih KOZ, i think that you should bring it there first, if it was a product disfunction, call the manufacturer of the aftermarket system, and have them cover the cost of the tow guy coming (did it come out of pocket? or did you have AAA?)

Demand that you want them to send you a new unit (that is, if the place that installed it didnt swap it out for you..which usually..they do)

As unfortunate as it is, electronics mess up sometimes, sometimes they do kinda wierd, crazy things, that SUCK when it happens..

If i were you, id go to the place, and handle it with them.

Oh, btw, what system do you have?

I would have to agree with everyone else that it's the alarm system. I have done exactly what you have in the past while changing my oil (hood up, engine running, door closed) and it has never locked me out. As a precaution, however, I do always leave my window rolled all the way down. I would have any spliced connections checked on the alarm's brain/module and all the other physical connections looked at too. My old Acura's third party alarm kept killing the starter when it wasn't supposed to. Turned out to be a bad ECU, so I got rid of it and after that everything went back to normal.
