Peculiar Behavior (Gear Shift)
I've got a 2006 SR5 (193K miles), and I had the dreaded "won't shift out of park" episode the other day, and after searching the forums, I looked at all of the fuses in the area to the left of the steering wheel and none were blown (I was thinking it might be a brake lights issue, but I had the wife press the pedal and they both worked fine).
Long story short, it happened a few times, and I was able to get it shifted by using the shift interlock button to release it manually. After I checked all the fuses and replaced them (as none were blown), I haven't had it happen again. I'm not worried if it does as I carry a small Gerber-type tool in my vehicle just in case, but I'm just curious if anyone has other ideas on what may have caused it. Seems like it could be a variety of different things, but I guess I thought for sure I'd find a blown fuse of some sort.
As an aside, I will say that I had some work done on the rear bumper lately (picked it up on Friday from that work and this happened Saturday morning), and seeing as I have a tow package installed, is it unreasonable to think that perhaps when they were doing the work to the rear bumper, they messed with the wiring harness for trailer light hookup? I've hauled trailers and things before and never had any issue that I was aware of...

If there's any chance that some drink or coffee has gotten spilled in there that could be the culprit. I've seen it many times. Especially if it was a drink with sugar it it. It can gum up the mechanism and cause it to not work. It's not all that hard to happen either, considering the location of the cupholders in relation to the shifter. If so, you just have to clean it out and maybe spray a light lubricant in there and it will work fine again.

Brake Switch?
A bad brake switch will cause the same issue intermittently but may have accompanying dash lights as well. Cheap, easy swap if it's the culprit, should be plenty of threads on it around here.

Mine did the same thing, intermittently at first while the brake lights were still working. Replaced the switch, all is good. It's under $25, easy fix. Part number in the pic below. I got it from McGeorge, which I have always had a good experience with.

So after checking the fuses and stuff, the problem stopped for a while and now it has come back so I'm going to order the stop lamp switch and see if I can just install it on my own. Hopefully this is the trick! Thanks again for all of the great advice. This forum has helped me learn a great deal about my vehicle and I think I enjoy it even more now as a result.
In related news, I'm going to try and find a replacement cap for the shift lock override button. It doesn't lock in place anymore.

Did the stop lamp switch end up doing the trick? Sounds like I'm in the exact same scenario you were in (brake lights are working perfectly, no blown fuses and there doesn't seem to be any mechanical issues within the shifter assembly after taking the whole thing apart) and now I'm considering buying a new switch in the off-chance that's what's causing my transmission to be stuck in park. If that wasn't your issue after all, mind sharing what it ended up being?

Unfortunately
@ PhantomF4E
hasn't been on the forum since November of last year, so you most likely will not get a reply from him.
I have "mentioned" him in this reply so it's possible he will get an email saying so and may visit the forum, but if he doesn't reply within a couple of days you might want to just get the switch and try it, it's easy to replace and not extremely expensive, especially if it solves your issue.

This is over year late in reply, but thank you to everyone who replied. I was about to make a new post on an unrelated topic, but figured I'd say my thanks on this one first!
