Engine Whine

Hoping someone can help me diagnose an engine whine.

The video below isn't mine, but my engine whine is identical. The whine becomes especially clear around 13 seconds into the video.

Fj Cruiser Throw out Bearing Whine - YouTube

The YouTube poster claims the whine is from a throwout bearing in his manual transmission. I don’t have a manual.

Has anyone had or solved a similar whine?

I’m thinking idler/tensioner pulley. Already replaced my alternator.

belt bearings possibly. If you have a harbor freight stethoscope you can find which area pretty quick, just don't get tangled in the spinning belt!

Mine was my alternator. Might try checking that. Mine would get worse with acceleration. It sounded like the power steering pump whine you get.

Some Updates

Replaced all 3 idler pulleys, the tensioner pulley, and put on a new belt. Still getting the whine.

Using a stethoscope, the sound seems to be coming from near the oil filter area. Anyone had a similar experience?

You said you replaced the alternator, I have the V8...but on the V6 isn't the alternator directly below the oil filter, if so I would say it could very well be your new alternator.

Good point. Bought a reman off rockauto. Wonder if the unit they sent me is faulty. The saga continues.

My 2005 4runner with 150,000 miles makes the same normal noises with the hood up.

You all worry about nothing. Wait until something breaks. Why spend money on service repairs and parts for nothing.

Geeze....

The Making of "Full Metal Jacket" - YouTube

Basic at USAF outside of San Antonio - about the same BS.

The best part of "basic" is getting to fire 90 rounds out of an M-16 in three positions (i.e., prone, sitting, standing). Remember?

Standing is the hardest. I shot 80 out of 90. Two in my platoon shot 90 out of 90 bulls eyes.
Very good weapon is the M-16.
I think the targets were 100 yards away.

WRONG as usual... a whine noise is NOT normal for these engines!

its called preventative maintenance mr expert mechanic... most people dont just wait until something breaks & leaves them stranded on the side of the road. if you see or hear something showing signs of a problem you fix it before it breaks! just more of the typical captkilmer nonsense...

& does that link or your stories of AF basic have anything to do with this thread???

Hey DB. You didn't tell the guy with the whine what his problem.
As usual you just "troll" around, are not a mechanic -and have nothing important to say.

Why don't you get lost and do everyone a favor?

theres that original "DB" again, did you think that up all by yourself skippy? LOL!

i dont know what the reason is the guy has a whine einstein.. so i dont tell him things that arent true like you do... these engines dont make a whine noise that he described but you & your expert mechanical knowledge told him its normal. surprised you didnt say its because he uses synthetic oil!

so now you are a mechanic huh? but cant even do a simple trans fluid drain & fill & you have to pay a dealer hundreds of dollars for T-IV fluid in your WS trans! & you cant understand or figure out why your engine still has "drops" on 10/40 conventional oil... & it calls for 5/30!!! oh & dont forget how that super slick synthetic oil will cause head gasket issues... maybe thats why he has a whine noise?? how embarrassing for you!!

pretty clear whos the troll around here... look at your other threads & posts & everyone laughing at you & calling YOU a troll!

You dropped 10 rounds at 100 yds between standing, sitting and prone? You would have never made it at the range in the Marines. No offense to any other USAF brothers/sisters here.
Captsolo if that is your marksmanship at 100yds I shudder to think what it would be at 300 standing, let alone 500 prone.

Not that worried.
89-93 USMC Veteran here.
Plus, his mom and dad probably wouldn’t buy him a plane ticket anyway.

Perhaps a silly question, but...
Can you hear the whine with the hood open and you standing in front of the vehicle?
Only reason I ask is that it could be alternator whine through the stereo due to grounding issues.
