Question Regear question (Center diff/transfer case low gears)

I couldn’t find a solid answer to this anywhere.

Is it possible to change the gears for 4lo on a v6? I am going to be regearing my diffs at some point (hopefully soon) and want a better gear ratio for off-roading in 4lo (somewhere in the range of 40 to 50:1 final ratio in first gear). I want to keep my hi gears stock for highway driving. Is this possible, and if so does anyone sell the gears required for this?

I am running 33s on a stock drivetrain right now on a 2004 4-speed trans (the one with a dip stick).

Thanks for the help! You guys rock!

Probably need a Marlin crawler or something similar. Marlin makes auxiliary gearing for off road applications.

Replying to pop this up - Marlin, Atlas and some others sell transfer cases for Toyota, but for the life of me I can not figure out if any of the regeard ones (4.7 or more) are available for 5th gen and if so what should one buy and whom to consult on this? Doesn't it make the most sense to regear the transfer case vs the differential?

I haven't seen anyone swap gears in our 120 series transfer cases. Tacoma's have the option of Marlin's dual case 'Taco Box' that bolts between the factory transfer case and transmission, but it won't work in our trucks, there isn't enough room, the fuel tank is in the way. Most FJ's and 4Runners I believe use an aftermarket Atlas t-case.

If you were trying to run 37's.. or were even on 35's and did some serious rock crawling I would say it would be worth entertaining the idea. 33's with a regear (4.56 i'm assuming? ) will be more than enough for what you'll ever need. Your money is better spent on lockers, at least for the rear, you'll see a heck of a lot more benefit to that over significantly lower gearing in 4lo.

just my opinion.. but I am on the v8 and low end torque is pretty phenomenal even on 35's with only 4.56 gearing.

I would love to make the 4 low in these trucks actually low without giving up the stock setup so I hope you find something for both of us.
