5th Gen Exhaust on 4th Gen?

I noticed rattling sound coming off of my runner from the rear, especially when in gear and stopped, low rpm. Crawled under and saw heat shield above muffler was only hung by two nuts out of four. Thought it was easy fix, and used large washer to fix the heat shield in place. The rattling sound was still there, and upon further investigation, the exhaust pipe broke off right after the muffler. And the flange where tail pipe is connected is so badly rusted, that might need to be replaced as well (see attachment). Initially planned to buy OEM again (it lasted 11 years in rust belt after all) but saw TRD cat back exhaust from bamwholesaleparts.com (PTR03-89200) and I like the black side exit, TRD, and the price would be similar.
There is installation and review video here as well.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1tYozOszgw

Willing to go this route if I can confirm that this will fit my 4runner. I have 2009 V6 4WD. Can anybody confirm this will fit my truck?
The website says it is only for 2020 and 2021, but the guy in the video got it on 2018. So it will probably fit all 5th gen, but not sure on 4th gen.

Thanks.

You should be able to have the pipe re-welded onto the muffler for fairly cheap, any exhaust shop should be able to do this. Still plenty of metal there, easy to access. Just a though if you're looking to save some money.

Thanks Inv4drZm for the advice. I suppose I could do that. But I also look at this opportunity to upgrade if possible. And looking at all that rusted exhaust components makes me sad.

Found a couple of reddit posts that say 5th gen exhaust works with 4th gen v6.

5th gen exhaust on my 4th gen! : 4Runner

5th/4th gen exhaust compatibility? : 4Runner

Can anybody on this forum give me more confidence?

Thanks!

sub'd because I have been searching for this question myself. From what I have previously read, all you have to do is bend one of the hangers but I haven't seen anyone validate that.

If you look at aftermarket exhausts like Gibson, the part numbers for 4th gen versus 5th gen systems are the same. Even if you look at the individual components of each system, they are identical. The more I dig into it, the more I believe it will work.

5th Gen TRD Pro Exhaust Installed on 4th Gen

A little bit of update on my own thread.
Short answer: IT FITS!!

Long version:
It didn't take long until the weld completely separated.
According to my research on the web, there wasn't conclusive evidence that 5th gen exhaust will fit on 4th gen. Probably not many people has done it or tried it. Toyota part number is different for 4th gen V6 exhaust and 5th gen. Upon further observation, the 5th gen exhaust lacks resonator on the tail pipe. I don't know if anyone has noticed different exhaust note between 4th gen V6 and the 5th gen, but maybe they've done something on the muffler to compensate for no resonator on the tail pipe section?

Some aftermarket exhaust lists 4th gen and 5th gen catback exhaust as a same part number. But Gibson for sure includes several pieces of pipe to have same part number to cover 4th gen V8, V6, and 5th gen exhaust. So that wasn't convincing either. Some people said they fitted aftermarket exhaust for 5th gen into a 4th gen without a problem, and there was a person who said they fitted 5th gen stock catback to 4th gen with minor bending of the exhaust hanger.

So I was a little optimistic, a little doubtful, but went a head and got a new TRD Pro exhaust for 5th gen. This exhaust comes stock on 2020 TRD Pro trim. So I was hoping Toyota quality and not too aggressive sound, and maybe a little bit of upgrade in terms of power and torque. They do advertise it for increased low end torque.

Anyway, I also got a new spring, bolt and gasket for that section (right before the muffler). Those are not included in the TRD Pro catback exhaust. And bolted on the new exhaust. It fits without modification, and fits perfectly! I didn't have to bend any hangers to make it fit. And most of install time was spent on torquing the tailpipie section bolts (three of them, stock one has two bolts), because the access is a little limited and I have a thing about torquing the bolts to exact spec.

And aesthetically I think it looks awesome. Goes really well with my black theme. And I like it that it exits to the side. I'd hope it hung a little higher to give some more clearance but other than that no complaints.

However, soundwise, I was hoping it was a little more subtle. During idle you barely notice it. If you listen carefully, there is a little lower frequency rumble to it, but passer-by won't notice it. While driving, you can feel it's presence especially when city driving and you are going up and down the rpm. During highway driving, usually the rpm stays pretty low even at 75-80 mph, so you don't notice much, but when it downshifts, it's noticeable.
I can definitely see why some people will like it and some people won't. If you are a person who likes Lexus like quietness then it's definitely not for you. My wife says, "It gets on my nerves." But some enthusiasts will love some rumble here and there, and giving their 4runner some character. Honestly I don't think it is any worse than any other aftermarket performance exhaust options out there. And if it were just me, I would keep it, but I want happier wife and she spends more time with 4runner than I do. So with that said, I will be putting this up for sale. With less than a week of use, it's still on my 4runner, so if anybody near Minneapolis, MN wants to hear it first hand, you are welcome to contact me.

This is very helpful information!

I lived in Chicago for 3.5 years and my 08 v6 4runner underbody took a beating from all the salt and snow. My exhaust will need a replacement due to that and this will help in buying for cheap when 5th 4runners upgrade to after market exhaust.

Thank you!

Just here to say that the 5th Gen (2018 TRD) stock exhaust directly bolted in from after the Y pipe back, no modifications required on my 08 V6 4x4. Basically from the muffler to the tailpipe section, 2 pieces - all factory hangers. I had a bent rear section when I purchased mine and was donated the 5th to swap.

Thanks for the details! Any chance you have some pics on where the rear exhaust tip hangs after the install? The OP's tip seemed to be a little lower than where I'd want it to sit

I've been looking for a set nearby to no avail. I've welded my old pipes more than I'd care to tell and the 3 or 4 year old Walker tail pipe is in worse shape than any of my 20 y/o OEM pipes. I don't want to buy new OEM for a truck that is running out of life because of rust but I refuse to buy after market junk.

keep looking, they are out there. facebook, craigslist, even ebay. the walker system installed on the truck only lasted about 2 years. joints were failing, hangers were leaking. walker is ok if you need to pass inspection, or are selling. not for long term.

I'll take some photos of it tomorrow, I'm actually going to remove the chrome tip off of it so I'll post some before and after.

Plan on pulling just the tip, off, that should make it end just after the flare.
