Hood Supports

Need to replace the gas cylinders that support the hood when open. Toyota parts or RH/LH - exact fit but very pricey. Aftermarket options I've seen are universal and I worry about the fit & rapid leak down. Good quality aftermarket suggestion?

I used some StrongArm brand tailgate struts on our 05 Sienna and have been pleased with them. So not on the 4runner or hood, but they seem to be a reputable and inexpensive alternative to OEM.

Theres a good thread on hood strut replacement here: DIY Replace hood struts - Toyota 4Runner Forum - Largest 4Runner Forum

I second using StrongArm brand found on Amazon.

I installed them on my 2005 Acura TL when I had that and the hood shot up super fast with only one installed.

I also used them to replace my failed struts on my tailgate of my 2006 4runner.

They work great and have awesome strength.

highly recommended.

i ordered some cheap hood supports from amazon and they work great with great fitment too. then i replaced my rear liftgate ones a year later but the aftermarket replacements for those weren't as smooth as oem. 2005 4runner.

+2 on StrongArm. I have them for my hood and tailgate. I bought them on Amazon.

I bought these two years ago today and they are holding up fine. The rear hatch ones are a completely different story. Amazon.com: 2Pcs Gas Charged Front Hood Lift Supports Struts Shocks Springs Props Compatible With Lexus GX470 2003-2009 / Toyota 4Runner 2003-2009: Automotive

Be careful what you replace with. Lots of junk out there.

I have 2005 4runner. I replaced with these from Amazon and they work great. Some don't work at all!
Amazon.com: 2 Pieces (SET) Tuff Support Hood Lift Supports 2003 TO 2008 Toyota 4Runner / 2003 TO 2009 LEXUS GX470: Automotive

NOTE: In Original Tuff Support Packaging With Lifetime Limited Warranty*

PS.. Mine have been in there since Aug 2019. Holding up fine so far.
