How prevalent is the transfer case actuator seizing problems?

Hey everyone,

I have a 97 sr5 4wd with the mechanical J shifter and a newly picked up 08 v8 limit 4wd. I love the simplicity of the 3rd gen but the refined bits of the 4th gen. When I tested the 4th gen 4L, it works fine.

I am going to be selling one of these rigs and I wanted to ask how prevalent do these 4th gen transfer case actuators seize up? I don't want to let go of an extremely reliable 3rd gen just to step into a 4th gen where I can expect for some of these high dollar problems to occur.

Any thoughts are appreciated How prevalent is the transfer case actuator seizing problems? thank you!

Do a FJ tcase swap and don't worry about the actuators failing ever again.

Just make sure to use it regularly. I will put it in 4wd at least couple times a month and also use 4lo when reversing into my steep driveway sometimes. Maybe change out the tcase fluid with some new fluid.

Since the actuators are currently working, should I now worry about it as long as I keep using them monthly?

If it's working fine, just keep exercising it periodically. Now, that doesn't mean there might not be some other issue on the horizon, but that wouldn't be likely and something that anybody could possible face. When I first got my 08 back in 11, I noticed my low range didn't want to go into gear. Read up on it here on T4R and tried to shift it a couple times every day and hope that I caught it quick enough to avoid any serious problems. After a day or two, as I remember, it started working with no further problems. A nice thing about the 4th gens is the normally open center diff (don't even know how the 3rd gens are configured). The v8 is an AWD so you don't even have to worry about shifting from 2W to 4W (AWD, essentially, in the v6's), just work that low range and your center lock (on a straight road if dry).

Thanks for the reply Bob. I will certainly do that. So far, loving the 4th gen!
