Finally got around to making some ti.e to head over to my mom and dads place to test out my dads new miller welder.
I was so anxious to get welding...and man, did it not disappoint. Heck of a welder for not too much of an entry cost... just under 2 grand for the welder, cart, tanks, and small odds and ends.
First time doing real welding and I feel like I got a hang of it pretty good. The thick material is obviously easier to weld than the thinner stuff. Im excited to get it done. Its a mostly tacked together now and the swing out portion is fully welded.

So hand drilling 1/2" steel proved to be my least favorite part of thr project... a good drill press would have helped a ton..

Thanks !
After a bit of lunch break tinkering my hi-lift is no longer on the roof rack and is super easy to get to

Wow, didn't think I'd love it but I do - awesome job! I'm betting this is something other folks would buy were to make several...

While finishing up with the swing-out, decided it was time to do the 4x innovations weld it yourself sliders.
Everything is welded up and paint is drying. Cant wait to see the finished results this week.
Decided not to powder coat anything.. would have cost me as much as the rest of materials for the project and if I scratch something I'll have to touch up with some paint later anyway. Hopefully it holds ups decently well.. did my best getting everything prepped.

I think the swing out is now complete..
Thinking about mounting the traction boards above the jack since they don't weigh anything and I have the room but for now it's complete.
Didn't come out half bad for a first time project. Only thing ill probably add is a drop-in pin as a secondary swing out security device in case the latch fails, other than that im super happy with it .

Had a couple of local guys contact me really wanting a swing out... I told them there's no way I can make it worth my while and also affordable... and then went through my design to see what could be simplified... well, SOC2.0 (swing out carrier ) is now complete and looks to be quite a bit easier to fabricate prior to welding. Should be just as strong, I think the first iteration was a bit overkill..

Yeah you can skip the 1/2" slab cut with the bandsaw for the tire plate. 1/4" should be plenty and a lot easier to drill through. Of course a cnc plasma or just a hand plasma cutter should make things easier and wouldn't require drilling.
Ultimately I gave up on my swingout designs and threw the tire in the hatch. That's just what worked best for me.
But as long as it works being overkill isn't a bad thing, in the end you can't beat building something yourself.

Yea.. I knew the 1/2" plate was overkill, it was the quickest thing I could get. 1/4" would definitely be the way to go. And you're right, overall is better than not enough. Eventually I'm going the rear bumper with a built in swingout route so this is just temporary and I enjoy the design and build aspect of it.

3rd and peobably final iteration of the swing out since I had a little time at work..
Reworked the pivot to be the heim joint type so there aren't any bearings or need to grease and cap, simplified the construction further to make it quicker to fabricate and added a secondary lock out drop pin in case the latch fails.
Depending on what my vendor comes back with on pricing I may be building another and getting rid of the original for the price of materials I have in it..

I already got your old wheels and tires, holler of you end up trying to sell the first iteration of the swing out

I'll be sure to let you man. I actually have plans to produce at least 2 new swing outs.. one just to verify the design (and because I love making stuff) and the second because I have another local guy dying for a swing out that isn't $1300-1500....
I'm still working out the detail on pricing of what the new swing out design would cost because I have wayy too much money to make it feasible in the first iteration, and I'm not 100% satisfied with the pivot point, though it works just fine for now... so if I were to sell the first iteration (unless I update that) it would cheap just to get my material cost out of it... probably in the $600 range...
the second iteration should be feasible to produce complete for probably 800..
