Replacing Side Curtain Airbags - Procedure?
2004 Limited v6 with 150k miles and in great shape and even just did the 5th gen brake system swap.
Ugh... so my vsc/trac control system had been off for awhile recently (seeing warning lights) and i ended up sliding off the road around a turn when my rear tires spun after i barely hit the gas shortly after it rained. Fortunately, it seems like the only damage was to my side running board, however both side curtain airbags deployed and of course both the front seat belt pretensioners blew. I've checked for frame damage but there is none.
Don't want to let my insurance adjuster look at it because they'll almost assuredly total it. Would rather fix things myself or possibly through a body shop if I can get it done at a reasonable price.
Can't seem to find instructions for doing this anywhere online. Can anybody help me figure out the procedure and what i'll need to do and buy? Any thoughts or suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated. Trying to save my Truck instead of having to spend tons of $$$ on a new one during tough economic times. Love her and she runs great!
Here's what I think needs to be done:
-Seat belt pretensioners: Either swapped with ones from salvage yard or can be removed and mailed in to get fixed for ~$60-80 each
-SRS Airbag computer module: Must be either replaced (salvage) or reprogramed by mailing in with seatbelts for ~$50-60.
-Side curtain airbags: Seen a few sites and ebay with used ones from salvage 4runners for around $500 for the pair.
Procedure:
-disconnect battery during entire procedure.
-replace seat belts (plugging in new/repaired pretensioners) and srs airbag computer module
-remove headliner (looking for best guide)
-remove side airbags (procedure?)
-install used side airbags (procedure?)
-reinstall the headliner again (same as removal but reverse?)
Anything else? Thanks in advance for any help i can get on this!
