More details here: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showth...=&threadid=225

If you look, Toyota places bolt holes too far apart for a standard plate -- there is a bracket that is to be included for that purpose, but it's included only in states where the front license plate is required. Everyone else is SOL. (I couldn't even get a part number to order from an out-of-state dealer.)

Arkansas is one of the states that has only has a rear plate, and it's not possible to get a bracket to put a license plate on the front. We have American flag plates on the front of the vehicles.

So I built a suitable bracket from aluminum.

I see. I'm in California and the front plate is required. I didn't see any bracket on mine either. The license plate frame is bolted on the front plastic bumper directly.

Hmmm....did you drill holes in the license plate? I didn't want to do that, because then standard frames wouldn't fit, either.

I don't know as I haven't received my plates yet. But the 2 holes seem to be in the right positions for a CA plate...

Please post what you learn.

I'm betting that the California plates are standard with holes at 7", so you'll need a bracket. If so, please have teh dealer give you the part number -- it seems to be a closely held secret!

I just measured my front license plate mounting holes on my 2003 4Runner's front bumper and they are exactly 7" apart and the california license plate also has 2 holes that are 7" apart so I'm ok. I'm wondering why yours is different?

No, the holes are there already. There is an empty license plate frame (plastic) mounted there. I haven't received my plates yet (probably a couple of months here in CA).

That doesn't make any sense at all ... let's think through this again.

The license plate mounting holes on my front bumper are 8 1/4" apart, and there is only one set of holes on the front bumper. Yet the holes in your bumper are at 7", and you don't have a bracket between the holes. Both of us have 2003 SR5's. That means the front bumper should be the same.

That still doesn't make any sense!

Do you by chance have the SR5 Appearance Package?

John,

No I don't have the appearance package. Mine is just a standard SR5, 2WD.
Yes, the holes are exactly 7" apart on my front bumper and it doesn' t seem that they can be anywhere else on mine. I can take a digital picture and post it here if you like (can i post picture here in the message)?

I don't doubt you, but the prospect of having different bumpers with holes at different widths just doesn't make any sense.

A picture might be helpful just to see what might be different. Unfortunately, I don't have a digital camera to post a picture of my front bumper.

Thanks for splitting up the thread.

John, here is the picture I took of my 2003 4Runner front bumper. Where the 2 red arrows pointing to are the 2 holes that the license place frame was mounted to by the dealer. They are 7" apart. I don't know what the other 2 big holes are for.

[The pic is in the next msg]
