Fixing a bad contact in the LED 3rd (spoiler) break light
For a while I have noticed that my 3rd break light in the spoiler would stop working. When I tapped on it it would start working again. Since LED lights usually don't burn out it had to be a bad contact. Taking it out and moving the wire confirmed that there was a bad contact. The only issue is that the light assembly is completely sealed. So in order to fix it I had to break it open. Here a summary of what I did to fix it, might help someone:
1) Remove the spoiler. There are two 10 mm screws at the top of the tail gate under some plastic cover. Once the screws are out you can push the spoiler down and remove it. Unplug the light connector.
2) Take out the two Phillips head screws on the back of the spoiler, this will loosen the light assembly.
3) Remove the plug from the metal clip holding it in place.
4) now the light is free and can be pulled out of the spoiler.
5) The hardest part of this repair is cracking open the light assembly without breaking the plastic. You have to separate the red transparent part from the grey base. I used a large flat head screwdriver to gently crack it open (just use the screw driver as a lever, no need to actually put it in the crack).
6) With the housing open take out the PCB with the LED lights. In my case both solder joints for the power cable were broken. I soldered them back on with some new solder.
7) Re-assemble the housing. I used superglue to glue it back together (probably won't be able to open it again, but I hope I don't have to)
8) I used a zip tie to tie the cable to the grey housing to hold it in place. I assume that the cable bouncing around lead to the solder joints breaking. Good for another 190k miles!
