2003 Toyota 4Runner Limited V8
For all intents and purposes, this is meant to be a compiled version of what is out there in so many places. This will also be (to some extent) a re-hash of a problem that has already been gone over in all of those places.
I have a 2003 4Runner Limited with the factory JBL stereo system (NOT impressed...). From what is gathered from my readings as well as owning the vehicle, the JBL system is terrible. Hopefully, others that have this system have found the opposite. I did not. The Head Unit (HU) had both tape CD capabilities which were both not functional and out of the 10 speakers in the system, 3 were not blown or deteriorated beyond function.
Stereo system going in:
- Alpine ILX-W650 (Head Unit)
- Alpine KTA-450 (Speaker Amp)
- JL Audio C1-690 (Front Component Speakers)
- JL Audio C1-650x (Rear Coaxial Speakers)
- Rockford Fosgate P3SD2-8 (8" Subwoofer - 2Ohm)
- Rockford Fosgate R2-250X1 (Subwoofer Amp)
List of accessory components:
- Rockford Fosgate RFK8-i (Subwoofer Amp wiring kit)
- RadioPRO ADVANCED TY1A-RS (Steering Wheel Controls Adapter Kit)
- PAC BKTOYK961 (HU Mounting Adapter kit and Bezel)
- Metra 70-8117 (Wire harness to tap into factory output of the factory amp to speakers)
- Metra 82-8146 (Front 6x9 Speakers, door adapter mounts)
- Metra 82-8148 (Rear 6.5x6.5 Speakers, door adapter mounts)
- Stinger RKFR69 (Foam kit for front speakers)
- Stinger RKFR6 (Foam kit for rear speakers)
- Stinger X Damping Material (Inside door and around speaker mounts)
Now comes the fun part! Here are the pictures that were part of the build. I didn't take as many as I would have liked to. Once I get going on something, I can lose track of some of the other items I meant to do. In this case, it was more pictures!
This is the beginning of tearing everything down:
Condition of the factory Subwoofer:
Everything in the back torn out, back passenger door panel, and front panel:
Only just the beginnings of the interior trim pieces coming out:
Shot of a JL Audio front tweeter mounted in its custom 1/4" MDF adapter:
Before shot of the driver's front door with factory components in:
After shot of the driver's door with JL Audio components installed:[url=https://flic.kr/p/2koGN5v]
Unfortunately, I did not get shot with the speaker out, damping mat in, and foam kit installed. I did need to do some trimming of the interior foam piece that went in the door to fit around a cross member and so the windows wouldn't hit anything on the way down. Did this on all doors.
Close-up shots on the front 6x9's and tweeters (needed to be mounted on the backside of the factory brackets to clear the door panel):
Next few are of the center console panels removed and ready to take out the old HU:
Because I was doing more to this than just an upgrade on the HU, I opted to remove everything out of the center of the vehicle so I had options of where I could run my wire for the subwoofer amp. I had originally planned on placing it in the spot where the factory amp was but it didn't fit. Instead, I mounted it under the passenger front seat.
HU came with a USB port and the subwoofer amp has a remote level controller, I mounted them in the "hidden" glove compartment:
HU removed and steering wheel control adapter placed (I had to take this back out and "update" the harness that it came with so everything would turn on and function properly):
I ran my RCA, Amp remote, and Amp remote level cable where the yellow cable sheathing comes down the center console:
Continuing this on another post because of too many pictures...
