Yes, that's what I mean.

Replacing or flushing will probably not get much of it out of the torque converter.

ok i was confused by saying it doesnt have much in common with WS, when it is actually WS...

& a full exchange will replace whats in the TC, or a bunch of drain & fill cycles will do it too. im sure you know this but when the engine is started, the trans pump pumps out fluid from the TC via the cooling lines into the pan, then cooled fluid is pumped back into the trans & TC. so when doing an exchange or d&f's you are exchanging the fluid in the trans & TC with new, thats why it takes a few cycles to start to see new fluid. no reason to do it 2 times if you are seeing nice new red fluid on the 2qt pump outs for an exchange or after a few d&F's.

Hi folks. I drove about 400 miles (mostly highway), and didn't feel the rumble at all (after putting in the Shudder Fix).

BUT, I did start to feel it once or twice at the end of the trip.

So, time to replace the ATF.

I'm planning to do the "ATF Exchange" method detailed here.

I plan to use Toyota WS.

Sound like a good plan?

sounds like a plan, hope it works for you.

thats a good tutorial on doing an exchange, but you should considering using a funnel & hose & let gravity do the work, so much easier that way. using a hand pump for 12-13qts of fluid will be a lot of pumping.

also if you dont want to remove the skid plate (& possibly fight with stuck bolts) look at the bottom of the driver side radiator tank from under the hood, pulling off the hose there & connecting the clear 3/8 hose to the port on the tank works great for the drain location.

I didn't have time to do this myself, so I took it into my trusted indie. They had done the exchange method using the cooler line before, so I felt comfortable.

Unfortunately, they didn't do the multi-stage exchange like I asked them to. Instead, they drained the pan and via the cooler line (but only once). They removed 3.5 quarts.

Here's the strange part: they needed to add 6.5(!) quarts to get it back to the proper fill. They performed the fill check procedure twice to make sure since the difference between the drain and fill amounts was so drastically different.

Very strange. Does not leave me with a good feeling that I've been driving it for a long time with a 3-quart-low fill, apparently.

The only explanation I have for this is that when I bought it from the original owner (who never touched the ATF), I had the Toyota dealer do a single drain and fill. Perhaps they didn't properly fill it? That's the only thing I can think of.

Only good news is that the rumble seems to have gone away. Fingers crossed it stays that way!

Thanks again, folks!

Charley

yes very strange indeed to have to add 6.5qts after a pan d&f. "if" the prev owner never touched the ATF there is no way it was 3qts low from the factory, ive read these transmissions can act weird just being 1/2qt low or high. personally i would confirm the fill level yourself when you get time... or ASAP! did you confirm or ask how they did the fluid check? no offense to your mechanic but something doesnt seem right if they had to add that much fluid after a simple pan drain.

now that they did one pan drain, it would be a good idea & might be easier to just do a couple more pan drains to get more new fluid in there & you can check the fluid level on the final fill to be sure its right. also on the first drain you can see how much comes out, if its ~3.5qts then you will know what they added was correct (& the trans was low previously) if its more than that you will know they overfilled it.

& if you are the the edge of rumble strips issues, adding in a tube of the lube guard to the last fill wont hurt anything & keep you ahead of the game... if the rumble comes back then you know its not fluid related & will need mechanical repair.

best of luck!

The most recent service seems to have done the trick.

YA!

Thanks all. I really appreciate it.
