Here's the strange part: they needed to add 6.5(!) quarts to get it back to the proper fill. They performed the fill check procedure twice to make sure since the difference between the drain and fill amounts was so drastically different.
Very strange. Does not leave me with a good feeling that I've been driving it for a long time with a 3-quart-low fill, apparently.
The only explanation I have for this is that when I bought it from the original owner (who never touched the ATF), I had the Toyota dealer do a single drain and fill. Perhaps they didn't properly fill it? That's the only thing I can think of.
Only good news is that the rumble seems to have gone away. Fingers crossed it stays that way!
Thanks again, folks!

yes very strange indeed to have to add 6.5qts after a pan d&f. "if" the prev owner never touched the ATF there is no way it was 3qts low from the factory, ive read these transmissions can act weird just being 1/2qt low or high. personally i would confirm the fill level yourself when you get time... or ASAP! did you confirm or ask how they did the fluid check? no offense to your mechanic but something doesnt seem right if they had to add that much fluid after a simple pan drain.
now that they did one pan drain, it would be a good idea & might be easier to just do a couple more pan drains to get more new fluid in there & you can check the fluid level on the final fill to be sure its right. also on the first drain you can see how much comes out, if its ~3.5qts then you will know what they added was correct (& the trans was low previously) if its more than that you will know they overfilled it.
& if you are the the edge of rumble strips issues, adding in a tube of the lube guard to the last fill wont hurt anything & keep you ahead of the game... if the rumble comes back then you know its not fluid related & will need mechanical repair.
best of luck!
