Another USB Outlet Guide

Hey everyone,

I found several great USB outlet install guides on these forums, but I went a bit of a different route.

First, I purchased this switch:
Amazon.com: QC3.0+5V 3A Dual USB Power Socket, Quick Charge Car Charger USB Adapter for Smart Phone PDA iPad iPhone Android GPS Use for Toyota: Beauty

Second, I took an old wiring harness connector I had laying around, and pulled the pins out. They fit perfect into the extra plug that is used for the smokers kit (which I never purchased). So I soldered the ends of the switch I purchased to these old connector pins. Then covered the soldered welds with heat shrink. I also covered most of the pin for that they didn't touch.

Lastly, the hot (red) wire pin was inserted into the pink/green stripe slot and the ground (black) wire pin was inserted into the white/black stripe slot of the factory smokers kit connector.

Zip everything up, should work with ignition power.

Disclaimer: Try this at your own risk, I am not a professional. Use a voltmeter if you want to double check your wiring.

If you have any questions, I am happy to help.

Thanks!

Thanks for posting this!

We have the same connector tapped into an 'always on' fuse to the left of the steering column, but I've been wanting to add more charging port in the same location you did, and also want these only on with the vehicle. Will probably copy this in the next week or two. Thanks again for the pics and write up!
