Largest Battery Size for 2003 4runner V-6
Does anyone know what the largest battery is that you can fit in the stock battery tray area? My son needs a new battery and I don't want to relocate it but would like to put the biggest battery I can fit in it. Any help appreciated!!

I think I've read around if it's too big the alternator can't charge it. I'm running an Optima redtop but don't remember the group number, I'd have to check the battery tomorrow.

Group 31 barely fits. Group 27 fits well with stock tray and mount and has almost the same capacity.

If you think about it and don't mind let me know. I want to put as large of capacity battery in as I can for my son.

group 31 fits, just need to extend the cables a little since the post is more in the middle.
27f fits, bigger than the 24f
24f fits

I would focus on the quality of the battery. Look at AGM's. I love my intimidator glass mat battery.

Sizing chart from Toyota indicates a 2003 Toyota 4Runner V6 takes the stock 24F or optional 27F.
Depending on what your battery needs are (e.g., cold weather starts, running lots of electrical equipment) it would be advisable to stick with the stock size.

My redtop is a 35 after all, says Red35 on the sticker and if you look near the positive post says 35 there also. No issues with it. Don't remember quite how long I've had it, but it's been at least three years I'd say.

Same set up.
Also Optima 35 with HKB fuse/diode, but only 1 year and 10K miles. Time will tell

i saw an install video or writeup where they say the redtops fit but the battery connections are tight. the ground is tight and the positive is stretched i remember them saying. did you notice that? they said you have to position the battery as far back and towards the edge for them to reach
if i dont just get a traditional 24 or 27 (i know toyota says 27f as option, but there are accunt of those sitting off the lip of the tray i believe) ill grab a redtop or x2 24 agm

Why the diode? Just curious as I don't run one and zero problems.

It's been a while, but I don't remember the install being anything but straight forward.

i think they might be referring to a diode added to trick the alternator to charge stronger or more for the AGM battery specs. otherwise the most the stock alternator can charge is less than the AGM output, by like 20%
