Looking at Coastal Off Road. Seems like their price point is fair and I like the look better than NW Trail's version I think.

Anyone done one of these? Looking for tips, advice, feedback. How hard was it? How much of a PITA was it to get powder coated (and cost on that?)

No useful input from me, but after looking around for a while I fell in love with both of their bumpers and the fact that you can save some by welding it yourself is a big plus for me.

I'll for sure be doing their rear bumper eventually.

I'm currently in the process of putting my Coastal bumper together, so I'll let you know how everything goes once I finish it and get it powder coated

Still working on mine but it's mostly done. Have some cleanup to do and then have to remove it to weld the inner seams.

Great way to learn to weld and how to shape metal. The directions that are included are only a guideline tho. Be prepared to custom fit it to your truck. I have a 1" body lift and ordered my front bumper accordingly but it ended up sitting 1/2" too tall and the top plates for the wings were hitting the lower headlight filler panels. So I had to take out 1/2" from the sides and almost 3/4" from the front plate. You also need to ensure the wings follow the body lines (this is also noted in the instructions) since they slope slightly up and the plates are all flat. Every piece, although already cut to size, will need to be massaged with a grinder (use flap discs, 80 and 120 grit) to get the proper fit. Do not be in a rush to complete this if you are doing it yourself and want it to look good. I've got 3 days of work done on it, spread over 2 weekends and I'm still not done.

I also advise against powdercoating. Use a good spray can bedliner paint. I use the Harbor Freight brand and it works great. Easy to touch up when it gets scratched. Powdercoat will look great but is NOT easy to touch up.

Fitting and building the passenger side wing. The metal 2x4 is on my floor jack and lifting the top plate of the wing into the position I wanted to get a consistent gap to the fender well.



Driver side almost done with fitment and tack welding.



Both wings welded in place. Still have to weld the insides of the whole bumper.



Welded the grill hoop on (it's optional, along with the headligth hoops) and then started the tedious task of grinding the welds to clean them up.







It's a ton of work, especially if you have never done any welding before. But, it's totally worth it, especially if you do all the work yourself instead of farming it out.

What did y'all (@xtremewlr & @P_nlsn ) do to relocate the washer reservoir?

Moved it into the engine compartment.

Used rivnuts to attach it to the fender and had to make a bracket for the 3rd attachment point. Drilled holes for the pumps and installed. Pretty easy.

I actually haven't gotten my bumper finished yet (Had to wait on a new headlight tube to get shipped down here after I screwed one up, then I finally dropped it off, but now winter weather has delayed the powdercoat shop since they do some of the work outside)

I plan to just leave it in its stock location and paint it black for now. Once, I get the bumper back, I'll assess how much it sticks out. I've heard you can get away with leaving it in its factory spot, and since I don't do any extreme rock crawling and stuff, I think it will be ok. If something happens or it looks like it will be a big problem though, I plan to do a similar setup to xtremewlr's - Use the Dorman 603-001 tank to move it into the engine compartment

some great build pictures there! Can't wait to get going on mine. I have both the front and rear bumpers from Coastal on the way now, literally any day. Planning on doing the front bumper first, ahead of my tacoma front end swap, and then doing the rear bumper with my own swing out for it.

Front bumper on mine has been done for a bit now. Just need a winch.

Yes, Harbor Freight spray can bedliner. I love that stuff.

Front bumper is Coastal, yes. If you can weld or want to learn, it's not super difficult, it just takes some time to complete and get fitted the way you want. Each vehicle is going to be slightly different, even when they are the same.

What did your total build time end up being ? Looks great. I just laid out all my pieces last night and am itching to get started asap. Probably won't get a chance to until next week but the plan is to go through and bevel all the necessary edges ahead of time and have it all ready to go. Im terrible at determining how much time I'll spend so we'll see. Hoping to have it all tacked together and partially welded in an afternoon... but I know how it will go.

I'd hold off on beveling ahead of time. Some of them don't need it with the way they fit and then some of them need extra trimming and fitting. You really have to build the bumper ON the vehicle and then it also gets removed/installed 3 or 4 times during the process for finish welding and grinding. Do not try to rush the process or you won't be happy with the results.

Mine took about one weekend for the center section and another for the wings. Then another weekend to do all the finish grinding and painting.

I have a 1" body lift and ordered my bumper accordingly. I still ended up having to modify it to fit my truck, cutting about 1/2" out of the 2 main upright pieces and the front skid plate part with the fairlead hole. This added extra time to the process obviously. Then there is the finish grinding and finding out you need to lay some cleanup welds to fill in spots you missed or welded too lightly and grinding exposes valleys that need to be filled. Then more grinding.

The best advice I can give is do not rush the build process if you want the bumper coming out nice. Even tho it's all pre-cut, it's still a custom fit to each individual vehicle.

Do those kits also take place of the factory skid plate?

No, they do not. These are bumper kits only. Coastal Offroad does have separate kits for skid plates however.
