Valve Cover Gaskets
The passenger side one has had a minor leak for quite a while now. But I finally want to get it done .
My local shop quoted me $400
How long of a job is this? I know you have to remove the plenum.

labor rate is $100/hr or more these days at most reputable shops so cost can add up quick if they have to remove the plenum & other related pieces. the price of the gasket is irrelevant when paying for labor. for example: a head gasket replacement on these engines can be $2500-$4000 due to the 24+ hours of labor it calls for... the head gasket is probably less than $100.
call around to a few other shops/mechanics to compare prices but if its too expensive for your budget, consider doing it yourself if you can.

I've done it on my 2004 and it's really not difficult. If you download the FSM from the sticky on here and find the section about doing the valve cover gaskets, it should be straightforward. I agree that time is going to be the reason shops want to charge a lot.

I just replaced mine when replacing the exhaust cam timing gears. Probably plan on approx. 3 hours with taking your time. Make sure you run a sealant a directed for the seam towards the front. To be safe I added a thin bead all the way around (didn’t want any leaks).
I used the Toyota FIPG seal packing gasket sealant but a lot don’t spring for that. If you’re anywhere close on maintenance you might as well replace your plugs while you have it apart since they’ll be exposed anyways.

Passenger side is super easy. You need FIPG or black rtv to seal two joints on the front of head. Can be done in 90 minutes.
Important note: do not over-torque the cover bolts. The cover bottoms out on boses on the head cover. If you over-tighten it, the cover will crack.

Thanks for the tips guys.
Looks like I'll just tackle it myself when the weather warms up, its not an emergency.. I'll get the plugs swapped out at the same time.
Does the plenum require a new gasket or sealant ?

You'll need both valve cover gaskets and yes the plenum uses a gasket as well. And some FIPG. I'd also replace the PCV valve and plugs while I have it apart.
Not a hard job, just organize the bolts and take your time. Plan for four hours give or take.

I have 159,000 Mi on mine. I bought new valve cover gaskets, plenum gasket, TB gasket, PCV valve, and new plugs. All my seals looked just fine and the Plenum gasket looked great. I replaced them since I had them but could have probably got away with not but I like to be safe.
The only gasket that I didn’t use but had bought was for the TB but didn’t need to take it apart so didn’t bother. I sprayed out my MAF as well while it was apart also, make sure to use MAF sensor cleaner though so you don’t damage it.

Thanks guys.
The starter literally just went out, luckily I'm home and my local auto parts store had one.
Guess what I'm doing tonight? lol
The only thing I've needed to replace was the rear hatch automatic latch in the 5 years I've owned it.. I guess I can justify doing a starter.

For anyone needing to do this job, get the 3° retard cam gears. You literally are doing everything required to replace them and they are a nice upgrade.

That seems very expensive. Its not hard just very tedious and its a job that can go wrong really fast with a broken bolt or a stripped nut.

Is the starter under the intake on this engine, or off to the side?
Valve cover gaskets are a great way to dip your feet into engine repair, was one of the first things I did to any car, other than basics like brakes. Not too involved. Someone mentioned not cracking the covers, there should be a pattern you tighten them in, as well as torque specs. The torque spec will likely be measured in inch pounds. You can get by without a torque wrench but the in lb ones can be found pretty cheap anyway.

In his first post above in this topic he mentioned it was the V6, so the starter is on the side of the engine, not under the intake like the V8.
