ClamChowder's '07 Sport - New Wheels & Tires

I am finally upgrading tires now that I can finish my suspension work on my 4Runner.

Question: Does anyone know size of factory sport rims? I know they are 17" but that is it.

Trying to fit 285/70/17 BFG KO2's on with front and rear 5100's and OME 896/886*.

* - about to, but have not yet ordered.

Another question: would you advise just going smaller tire??

I already have SPC upper control arms, and the ARB front bumper - so not worried about rubbing so much as trying to figure out if I need to order wheels, or not.

Final Questions: If I do need to order new wheels, what size should I get for the 285/70/17 BFG KO2's?

I am way less concerned with looks than duty. This rig sees mud, snow and dirt much much much more than it sees pavement or gravel. I just don't know squat about tire sizing - even though I've been trying to teach myself. Unfortunately, all the reading in the world only gets me so far until I bite the bullet and try to make something work. Unfortunately, in this instance, I know I am not willing to use spacers - but know I need a bigger and more aggressive tire than what I have gotten by with to this point (Geolander 265/65/17 on factory 17" aluminum Sport rims).

Any insight into this tire predicament anybody has would mean an awful lot. Kicking myself for not being able to figure this out any better than I have, and also for not having 5 good tires/wheels for adventures

Appreciate you badass MFers.

If definitely get the 285 size you're looking at, sounds like you eliminated most of the running with the bumper and SPC. For wheels, get some 17x8 - 10, no problems fitting them and bit wider stance.

Awesome, thank you so much for helping out. I like your build, btw!

One more question for you:

Is that offset negative 10mm, or positive 10mm? I assume it is negative, but just have no damn clue what I'm doing - sadly!

Yes negative, negative=wider positive=narrower, it's backwards lol

Thanks for the kind words on the build!

Some time has passed. "I am a little older. I'm a little wiser."

I've got fresh -12mm offset wheels, wrapped up in some KO2 285/70/17's.

I really need to get new shocks/struts - currently running 5100's.

I've got OME 886 front springs, 896 rear.

Currently torn now on what strut/shock to get. It is absolutely nuts how much division there is over models, brands, and form-factor. Seems one person swears by what other people swear against - as a rule of thumb.

You have any recommendations? I'm about to jump off a cliff after weeks of searching 10 year old forums just to keep finding wider and wider opinions, brands, models, etc.

Thought anything OME made sense - but - everyone seems to hate em.

Thought Bilstein 6112 were good, until others told me otherwise.

Anyways, thanks for your wheel/tire input. Off to the netherrealm of trying to find a satisfactory suspension combination for added weight 4th gen 4runners, that will stand up over long trips of very shit 'roads'/trails. Featuring such hits as the "Can Am Highway", "Alaska backcountry" and - my personal favorite - dirt country roads that go hundreds of miles without maintenance OR people around. Pssssh, why even waste the time searching for the goldie locks? At this point, being left for dead in the middle of nowhere is starting to seem less painful than selecting a kick ass shock/strut!
