Who's running a thermostat w/ transmission cooler

First Chicago winter with my external transmission cooler and my transmission (on fresh fluid, did a full exchange) seems to be shifting a big sluggishly.

How many of ya'll are running thermostats/bypass valves with your external transmission cooler? Also, if you are running a external thermostat, which one are you running?

Something like this: Derale 13011 Fluid Control Thermostat

I just put a cover in front of the cooler in the winter. I switched to amsoil synthetic fluid so that its not affected by cold, wont thicken.

Personally I want my ATF to max out at 180*F if the t-stat doesnt open until 180* then my tranny is running at 200*. You have to think the fluid will run thru the radiator first so the t-stat may never open.

Love the simple solution, and that’s a good point about the tstat opening late.

I’m running Toyota ATF. Should I be concerned about oil thickening?

I'm running an all aluminum radiator with a trans core and from there to an external cooler. I feel like there's really no way for the fluid to be very cold when it's running thru the radiator that's cooling the engine, but I have a towel to throw over it just in case I see it running super low on the way out of a snowy campsite
