Alternative nav + radio head units that can work in a 4Runner

So the aux audio on my 2008 Ltd no longer works, but all other audio sources work okay. When on a bluetooth speakerphone call, the audio of that also cuts out at times.

I’m thinking the problem may be in the head unit.

I really do not have any interest in buying a new audio system. I’m thinking of pulling one out of a car parts junk yard.

Finding 4th gens in a yard seems to be tough to do — a lot of 3rd gens.

But is there any reason I can’t just pull any double-din head unit out of another car? Perhaps a Lexus would offer one that’s compatible with my 4Runner?

Might even be a better choice if I can find one in a newer model year as the 2008 4Runner didn’t have bluetooth audio; just phone.

Recently found a YouTube video of a head unit from a 2015 Yaris as a nice OEM-style replacement, I think the word is out and those aren’t as easy and cheap to find as they were when that video was made a few years back. Scion units from the mid-2010’s might also be a possibility.

I think issue you’ll run into is the wiring for the jbl stereos is different than non jbl. You can try finding a scion some of those models are plug and play. I’d look at crutchfield.com to see what your options and pricing is

I thought about a Scion radio too. The price of aftermarket units just makes those more attractive. You can buy an Android Auto/CarPlay unit for $350-$400 from Pioneer/Sony/JVC.

Does anyone know if the Yaris units provide extra wattage over the factory HU?

As much as I like the "OEM/OEM Plus" approach to modifications, the aftermarket has some nice head unit options that blend in nicely. Not to mention, Apple Carplay and Android Auto are really nice to have.

If you go down the aftermarket route, grab one that has a capacitive touch screen. It'll feel much more familiar like an iphone/majority of modern smart phones.

It's one of the big difference between Sony's AX1000 vs AX5000.

The capacitive touch screen on the AX5500 is very nice. I strongly recommend it and I’m glad I spent a little more.

Yeah I do actually agree. I’m just not wanting to spend the money on a real aftermarket system right now.

Search Amazon for the Atoto Android head unit. Works great in mine.
