5th gen axle fit on a 4th gen?
Will a 5th gen axle fit on my 4th gen? I don't care about the performance upgrade and stuff. I just want to know if it's a direct component swap?
Details-
2006 v6 4runner with 180k miles. Rear end is shot. Shop is saying I pretty much need all the rear axle guts and seals. If they're new OEM cost is going to be more than my 4runner is worth. Finding a whole use axle with the shop to install is going to cost at minimum $3k. Which i can kinda confirm- on LKQ the whole rear end is just under $2k, so appox $1k in labor. I know that I can swap out a whole axle, but i'm not confident to swap out the guts myself.
So will a 5th gen axle fit on my 4th gen? I have a line on a local 5th gen that is being parted out with 59k miles for $400. There is someone else thats parting out a 4th gen but they haven't gotten back to me about it so i don't know if i can get it and at what cost.

Yes the 8.2 from the 5th gen should bolt right in. I haven't done it myself but
@ Drift Monkey
and
@ TheHennDoggg
have both swapped in 5th gen axles with elocker. Look at both of their previous posts and especially TheHennDogggs build thread, I believe he got his rear end for $220 at an LKQ since pull your own rear axle is a flat rate.

Thats great to hear!
Any idea how idea how to find out if it is the 8.2? From what i read- pretty much all these 5th gen 4runners are 8.2 rear ends?
The donor 4runner is a 4x2[5th gen] and mine is a 4x4[4th gen]- any possible issues with gearing? I'm asking the guy for the VIN so hopefully i can confirm what gearing it has.

I believe all 5th gens are the 8.2. Should also be able to expand your search to FJs as well, they came with both the 8 and 8.2 depending on the year.
I don't think that gearing is an issue 4th to 5th gen, but not 100% sure on that. I think they all were 3.73 though. For FJ you will have to make sure it's also an automatic because the manuals had a bit lower gearing, 3.91 iirc

If your doing the swap make sure the donor has an elocker. Low range offroad sells a full wiring harness for it. If your going to all the effort, get the most out of your upgrade.

Did this ever get done? Looking at doing the same for a bit more strength and elocker. Mines a bit rusty on the axle but my frame is good. It’s weird.

I don’t know about all ways but I ordered an axle from lkq. I asked for pictures of it which I was turned down for. Paid for the axle $2k. I borrowed a buddies trailer and drove 2 hours to pick it up, and no elocker. I stopped them before they loaded it and said nope, that’s why I wanted pictures. Then waited 3 days to find my money not back on my card. Sat on the phone arguing and on hold for 2 hours for them to finally refund my money. Overall not satisfied with lkq.
