It was very simple getting it fixed using the Walmart $20 Scanner, told me the code and told me what the code was for, messed with gas cap twisted CW click click click and guess it's now tight, never understood the twist CW click click click and just a easy CCW turn and it's lose again just does not seem right but it had been working for past 13 years.

So much for Toyota's great Engineering.
I'm not going to touch the first paragraph, I think duffdog has explained thoroughly that the two systems are intertwined and rely on everything functioning within expected perimeters.

The "twist CW click click click" is a torque limiting ratchet system to stop overzealous gorillas from tightening the f*ck out of the gas-cap and getting it stuck on the filler neck. And then potentially breaking the filler neck off of the tank trying to get the over tightened cap off.

Adding that the constant over-tightening and then said owner reefing on the cap to loosen it, will weaken the joint at the tank... causing it to snap off in an accident, dump fuel everywhere and turning a small rear-ender into a giant human BBQ.

Think I have wasted my time so now I really could care less what you or any of the others have to convey in regards to original post.
So I am ending my involvement in this thread.

5 or 6 years ago, the same lights came on for me. The truck was running fine so I did not get all worked up about it, but I spent 10-15 minutes searching t4r.org just as soon as I got home. I determined the first thing to try was cleaning up the surfaces on the gas cap and filler tube. That worked for about 6 months. The next time the lights came on, I bought a new cap and have not worried since. This site has a wealth of information available and the truck is rock solid. Mine has 151k and is running strong. But if you want to complain about dealers, buy a BMW Z4. I'll commiserate with you then...

GENERAL DISCUSSIONS SECTION RULES:

1. Topics are to be related to the Toyota 4Runner.
Post HERE if your topic can be applied to any generation 4Runner. If you're posting a question about your specific model year truck, please do so in the correct generation subforum (IE: 3rd Gen T4R's). Threads may be moved at admin / mod discretion. Access the other subforums from the home page or by clicking the Forum Jump drop down menu.

2. Please help keep our forum organized.
Posting in the proper subforum helps keep our forum free of clutter. If you're looking to sell something, we have a classifieds section just for you. If you're unsure of which subforum to post in, consult the home page for descriptions of each.

3. Report Spam and other rule breakers
Removing spammers, bots, or unruly members is a big priority. If you see any of these, please do not reply to it and report the message to us. Reporting is as easy as clicking this exclamation point below the offender's username.

T4R.ORG FORUM RULES

Usage of this forum is dependent upon acceptance of the following rules:

Rules for Toyota-4Runner.org

1. No Whining
This includes, but is not limited to, whining about other members, whining about the mods, whining about the admins, whining about the forum in general, whining about other forums, etc. Determinations on the issue of whining shall be in the sole and absolute discretion of the admins / mods.
=====================
2. No Personal Attacks
This includes, but is not limited to, name calling, racial slurs, threats, badgering, shouting (typing in ALL CAPS), etc.
=====================
3. No Trolling or Posts For the Purpose of Instigating Flame Wars
This includes, but is not limited to, posts designed to instigate political and religious flame wars (e.g., starting a poll asking whether or not you think the President is a re****). Trolling includes making deliberate provocative posts with the aim of inciting an angry response or disrupting discussion. Determinations on the issue of whether a post was made for the purpose of trolling or of instigating a flame war shall be in the sole and absolute discretion of the admins / mods.

4. No Rated X, R, or NC-17 Content
Please use discretion while posting in order to help keep this a "work-safe" website.

5. No Solicitations from Businesses without Prior Permission
This includes, but is not limited to, product previews, ads, and other forms of "spam" from a business. If you have an accessory to sell and want to make ONE announcement about it in the Accessories sub-forum that is okay.

6. No pics unrelated to the T4R or excessive pic posting
Server space is expensive - therefore this site should not be used as a free photo hosting site for pics unrelated to the T4R (e.g. pics of your dog, your wedding, your vacation to Timbuktu, your sports memorabilia collection, your Corvette, etc, unless of course there's a pic of a T4R in the shot). If you post pics unrelated to the T4R it may be deleted at the discretion of the mods/admins. In addition, please refrain from excessive pic posting (e.g., attaching dozens of photoshopped versions of your taillights to see which version looks best). If you post an excessive amount of pics they may be deleted at the discretion of the mods/admins. Also, please do not post pics of another member's ride without their permission.

You're welcome to post as many photos as you like, so long as they're hosted elsewhere (IE: Photobucket, flickr, imageshack, etc.)

7. No Multiple Registrations
Registering under more than one username is prohibited. Registering multiple usernames will result in a permanent ban of original and all related usernames.

8. No multiple postings
So that our members benefit from continuity in the discussions on this board, posting the same/similar thread in multiple sub-forums is prohibited.

9. No post whoring
If you're one of those guys with too much time on your hands and you don't have anything better to do than post up every two minutes making pointless threads or just letting us know what's on your mind at that very second, then this forum is not for you. Determinations on the issue of post whoring shall be in the sole and absolute discretion of the admins / mods.

10. No creepy or gigantic signatures
Even though they are harmless, please do not use sigs that trace and display info about the viewer's IP address, location, etc. Also, so that our members don't have to constantly scroll down past gigantic sigs, please keep your sigs within the following ranges:

a) No more than 5 lines of text (including empty lines)
b) No pic taller than 200 pixels or wider than 500 pixels.

11. No Links / Discussion / Promotion of Illegal Activities
This includes, but is not limited to, links / discussion / promotion regarding software piracy (including duplication of Toyota Navigation DVDs) and Carfax requests on records of a particular VIN, etc.

12. No Posting in SPAM Threads
Please do not post in SPAM threads. Doing so makes detection and moderation of SPAM more difficult for the admins/mods. Posting in SPAM will result in a one-day temporary banning.

13. Have a good time!
The point of this forum is for all of us, as members of a community, to learn about the 4Runner and have fun. Hopefully by following the above guidelines we can make everyone feel welcome and comfortable.

Failure to follow the above rules can result in warnings or permanent banning from Toyota-4Runner.org.

You are accusing the dealership of scamming you, but never actually went there... so yeah, it's cool you have a scanner you like. You have no evidence the dealership would scam you though. If you have had bad experiences with one, find a different one maybe?

Do you see anything i posted about my going to any Toyota Dealer?

My Original poat: Please read it and try understanding it.

my Toyota 4th Gen 4Runner when there was a check engine light that out of the blue appeared, they have to includ a flashing antiskid light.

This really has nothing to do with what fired up the check engine light, but if one googles the flashing antilight Toyota and many other online repair imformation for money sites, will tell you that your Toyota is dangerous to keep driving and you should quickly have it towed to your Toyota Dealer, or with the other online sites pay to get help.

All i had was a gas cap not sealed this had nothing to do with the antiskid sensors on my 4Runner.

I grabbed my trusty super costly Walmart $20 Hyper Tough code scanner, plugged it in and it found the fuel evaporator code, i retightened my gas cap and cleared the code, then again checked the system all was OK and check engine light and flashing anitskid light was now off.

If i had gone to my Toyota Dealers Service Dept. they would have checked me in sent me to their waiting room, and about an hour later came and told me i needed a lot of work to make my 4Runner safe to drive, costing a lot of money.

If i told them please make my truck safe again and signed the paper work giving them the Ok to do the work, in around an hour they would tell me it's ready and charge me maybe from $500 to $2000 dollars.

And all they would have done is tighten the gas cap, and cleared the codes.

Go to Walmart and get one of these $20 scanners they are all you really need.

Since you’ve posted up the rules it seems like you’re in violation of quite a few.

-Rule 5 with your little Walmart scanner you’re trying to sell everyone on
-Rule 9
-Rule 13, definitely have your panties in a bunch and not having a good time

“ Failure to follow the above rules can result in warnings or permanent banning from Toyota-4Runner.org”

You should really just quit while you’re behind or continue to get some of the funniest, wittiest banter I’ve seen in a while.

If it is determined by the ECU that a harmful or out of specification condition exists regarding the emissions system, the computer (by federal law) must show the owner that an out of specification condition exists via a "check engine light". The MIL light indicates that an out of specification emissions condition is occurring and by default may alter or change the ignition timing, VVTI timing, spark clearance, throttle response or any combination of any of those parameters to mitigate the excess emissions of harmful or otherwise non-approved fumes, gases or particulate emissions from any of the federally mandated emissions systems. A side effect of the computer attempting to mitigate the excess emissions from a non-functioning system is a reduction in torque or power under high calculated loads. Due to the reduction in power from the engine, the skid computer (which uses engine power to operate), may have a different response to terrain irregularities than what was originally programmed by the firmware engineer who designed the skid control ECU's response patterns to tire-slip conditions. At this point, it is additionally required by federal law that if a vehicles anti-skid or anti-slip system is operating out of specification and may cause unintended and unexpected vehicle maneuvers which can possibly affect the stopping distance or rollover prevention mechanisms of the skid computer, a light is illuminated to indicate such a condition exists.

Any questions?
Damn bro you ended his career there

And all they would have done is tighten the gas cap.

For the price, I would have considered just replacing the gas cap. I will only use OEM Toyota parts in my 4runner, and thats why is runs so well and will last a long time.
