I haven’t taken a look at the 2003 yet but I have a feeling it’s going to be well rusted too. It spent most of its life in the northeast

Just bought an '06 V8 with 135xxx last week! Feeling like I overpaid but glad to finally have one. Things I checked for:
  • Exhaust manifold leaks – believe you'll hear a clicking on startup
  • Rust (found a rust free one)
  • Timing belt change (seller could not find paperwork but SWEARS it was done at 120k –– I will be looking for stickers as suggested earlier in this thread tomorrow, hadn't noticed any yet!)
  • All electrical + stereo working
  • 4Lo + Center Diff Lock engaging (found this sketchy to try as pretty sure you're not supposed to use this on pavement)
  • Fuse boxes for any aftermarket installations -- no rats nests, etc.

I don't have buyers remorse yet! Just ordered some JBA high caster upper control arms yesterday, looking forward to getting my suspension dialed in to clear a slight tire rub on 285/70/17s. Currently running Bilstein 5100s front + rear with Bilstein springs in the back & OEM springs in the front. Need to get my 15 posts in so I can get some proper advice on that, lol.

The JBA are notorious for rubbing on tires due to their gusseted design. You may be ok with that size tire and the I believe slightly wider offset wheels from the 5th gen. Let us know!

Pro tip for UCA install: driver side remove battery and tray (takes two minutes) makes taking the bolt out a lot easier. Also torque that bolt with the tires on the ground.

awesome, thanks for the advice! I'm running the spidertrax 1.25" wheel spacers on those FJ wheels as well, do you think that'd help clear any potential UCA rub?

Question New, looking for some info/advice

Was up everyone? I'm a bit new with this so I apologize ahead of time if this is posted in the wrong spot or format or whatever. am too new to start a new thread apparently. Sorry.

I am picking up a 2006 4runner and am looking to upgrade it with a couple of things. I was hoping someone might be able to steer me in the right direction on what i would need, minimum to make this build work.

i want to switch the stockt tires to 285/70R17 tires (32.71"), add a ARB style steel front bumper, similar rear bumper and a few other things.
I easily know my way around any garage but what i don't know is what is I would need to make the new tires size work without incurring serious problems. It sounds like with some BMC, i can get away with a 2" lift but i don't know exactly what all i will need to get my hands on, especially since i the new bumpers and rack will add at least some weight.

I'm not looking to go rock climbing or anything super serious, just have enough ground clearance to get me down most decent trails to get me where i want to go and try to look good doing it.

Check for rust on undercarriage before you buy. Look for one with an undercoating. Bring a mechanic with scan tool.
Drive it on highway at 70 mph to make sure tranny and engine are good.
