Brake Time
It's time to replace brakes on my 2007 SR5 4WD. Just got a quote of roughly $300+ per axle from Toyota, so this is something I'll be doing myself.
Unless needed, I don't see replacing rotors or calipers. I know some people spend hundreds and hundreds to upgrade breaks. All I really want is for them to stop the vehicle, not impress people.
What's typical? I'd love to purchase from either Amazon.com or Advance Auto. If there is no reason to replace rotors, what would you recommend for pads? Do some people buy the replacement pins just to make life a bit smoother?
What does a typical shop charge for turning rotors if needed?
And I know this is the can of worms, but does someone care to link or detail the sticky brake issue that these supposedly have? Is it all vehicles or just luck of the draw? I have noticed sometimes that it seems my brakes sorta "hung" after use but what's the worst this causes? Heat and premature pad/rotor replacement? I haven't ever felt it's been a huge problem.
---
At a quick glance, I'd be interested in this purchase:
Bosch BSD976 SevereDuty
Ceramic pads? Less/no dust? Other pros/cons?
Open to any/all suggestions of course. I'd prefer this not be an expensive quest, as new tires are around the corner as well.

Wow, you really sound like you have never done a brake job. Its not rocket science. But mistakes can cause serious problems. Would you know a seized caliper if you saw one? It not just a matter of slapping pads on and go. Take it to Firestone or Midas. You will have a 50/50 shot of getting it right.

Well, I haven't. Doesn't mean I cannot. When did you ever do your first?
Just because I haven't spent hours researching an issue about 4th Gen 4Runner brakes doesn't mean I would or wouldn't recognize an issue if it presented itself. Thanks for those odds, I'd say I have better than that.

Truth be told, after discovering Rock Auto and the fact that the Power Stop kits are quite a bit cheaper than on their website, I may very well go with this or something similar:
More Information for POWER STOP KC2421

I notice several different models for the Power Stop kits. I don't do towing, so I figure their "Daily Driver" kit will be perfect? I notice a few differences even amongst those.
Also, I notice on RockAuto Power Stop has an "OEM Replacement" kit. That any good?

I want to 2nd the recommendation BertyK gave for the Akebono pads but I used Brembo rotors. If it turns out that you do in fact need to replace the calipers I'd strongly encourage you to upgrade to the larger rotors used on the Sport model T4Rs. I did that and the difference is very noticeable. Much less pedal effort required to slow and stop. Not about impressing anyone, just improving one aspect of my ride.

For the life of me, I cannot find where to enter a promo code, and I do IT work for a living.
Do you have to call them, create an account, or something similar?

I see. I think you just paste it into the "Where Did You Hear About Us" section.
I morphed this thread into a different direction here:
2007 SR5 Brake Recommendations
I guess after realizing that I could likely do pads, rotors, and calipers for about $500.00 made it seem like an option. In the past, I thought it was easily a $750.00 to $1,000 deal.

I had a similar train of thought. Ended up sizing up my front brakes to 5th gen components off rockauto. After getting my core refund, cost me $350.

I did the whole upgrade to 5th gen calipers and rotors. Along with the job I did the Brake lines at each corner and the rear intermediate, added speed bleeders to the calipers, replaced all fluid with dot 5.1, replaced rear shoes, replaced all e-brake hardware, used Toyota caliper grease (anti squeak used on back of pads and metal to metal places, and Toyota rubber grease for slide pins.
Below is the breakdown of cost and part numbers I used. When I do the brakes on a new-to-me vehicle, I do it all so I know where it stands.

Am I missing something....your photo shows 4 calipers but the list/price list only has 2 calipers, 1 front and 1 rear?

Akebono ceramics/ Brembo rotors front 250$
After some reading here and couple of Youtubes I did for the first time brakes in a car. No calipers needed. Only front, brembo non perforated rotors (aprox 150$pair) ,and akebono ceramics (aprox 50$)+ some brake cleaning fluid/antizeise grease (everything Amazon). No sweat. Couples of hours, done by the book. Good break in. Better braking than previous OEM. Not far from the 300$ you were asked for but peace of mind.
(Mine has the small calipers/16 in wheels)

I have had the PowerStop Z36 kit for several years and it’s been great. Also, PowerStop has a $30 rebate at RockAuto through 31Mar21.
