Afe drop-in filter not filtering air properly

Found somthing disturbing last night while working on my truck. I have a snorkle and therefore I have ram air effect in my intake.
I pulled engine air filter AFE out and noticed a lot of fine dust inside my airfilter box and obviously I wanted to find out why.
So I found that drop in filter is smaller then stock toyota filter and when you insert the housing at the back and use front clips to lock the housing in place that afe filter moves to the front of the housing and thus creating a poor seal at the back of the housing. So I cleaned the housing and applied felt tape between the main housing and filter, hopefully this will stop free sliding of the filter inside the housing when it's being locked during filter installation.

Anyway, this whole thing sucks because I have no idea how much crap was ingested by the motor over 30-40k that this filter was there.

Prime reason I want to get a pre-filter for my snorkel. But thanks for the heads up!

Is this for a 4.0L V6? I switched from the K&N to the AFE on my 2nd gen Tacoma and haven't really looked into the airbox much.

I also got the AFE drop-in for my (new to me) V8 T4R, but the airbox on that engine is oriented with the filter horizontal, so I'm assuming gravity would keep it in place.

This is one reason I dont buy into the whole a/m air filter thing.

To gain maybe 1 up and a few lbs of torque at the top end, you have just let in all that unfiltered crap into your engine. Look what you are buying to fix the issue and possibly have to deal with later just to make that filter work.

I'll stick with OEM toyota filters

After reading this thread, I went outside and looked at the afe air filter in my V8. I don’t think it’s any smaller than the stock air filter. If it is, it’s a minuscule difference.

Like bmgreene commented, the filter is horizontal, and thankfully I found zero dust on the engine side of my air filter housing. The housing was pretty dusty/had debris on the pre-filter side. At first, I freaked out because I thought it was the engine side.

Mine is v6 and filter is vertical so maybe mine shrunk after 2 years or rubber deformed. I'm not sure. I have it in my rx350 as well. I'l have to check that one too.

So I have swithed to regular filter and I took time to take pictures to show my inspection results.
So AFE filter was not a tight fit at all and had collapsed side which allowed a free bypass for dirt.
Also, i got prefilter now. Let's see how fast someone will want to steal it.
