A guy that would reply to a question and get immediately off topic about his boat and living in the Bahamas. He really didn't like synthetic oil, or WS transmission fluid for whatever reason. See here for an interesting read: Synthetic Vrs. Conventional in older 4runner

i have the same problem, i wanted my frame replaced a year or 2 ago. checked with the dealer and they said it will cost $15000-20000 to replace it.

so i tried to remove all the rust myself during the height of covid. i removed the rear bumper, tires, rear exhaust for better cleaning and found out that the rear upper control arm that's connected to the frame(both sides) is so rusted and there was a hole in it. i was like, this is not good. it's an accident waiting to happen. i still painted it and removed the rust. not worth it so i made it just a backup car now, never to be driven in rain or snow and just for local roads driving.

to the OP, have those upper control arm checked and the frame part of it. that's where the problem lies.

We helped my son buy a 2008 4Runner (it’s a 4x4 limited V6). Purchased in MN, we live in WI. Frame is like you would expect. Not as bad as some, but not as good as anything you would see in Colorado, etc.

For my boy’s high school graduation this spring, I would like to have his frame worked on. Meaning grinding off surface rust, fluid film (whatever) and most importantly replacing any portions that need to be replaced due to rust.

Is there a place within a day’s drive or so from WI that can do this kind of repair work? Body, engine are great. Hoping this at least gets my boy through college with his 4R.

Thanks!
I cant believe Toyota hasn't recalled one of the best built generations of the 4Runner ever. But Of Course Toyota couldn't let it become the longest lasting, most durable and giddy up SUV ON THE MARKET, OH NO. WHEN THEY DECIDED TO DROP THE 2ND GEN 4.7 IN THE 4TH GEN 4RUNNER, THEY SPARED NO EXPENSE ON THE MOTOR BUT BEING THAT THE ENGINE WAS BIGGER THEY HAD TO REDUCE THE MANIFOLD SIZE YET PACK IN THE MOST EXPENSIVE catalytic converter that the cosmetics are amazing yet the actual insides were built by the lowest bidder and they bought their parts from the u.s. government with Joe Biden and Chuck Schumer laundering, I mean keeping the books by using an already written in ledger using multiple different color giant crayons and the inside of the catalytic converter according to Joe Biden is made with the finest materials China has to offer but made in the United States so what they used for the honeycomb is they put some Jack Link's underneath the Cadillac converter and Bigfoot would come over and take a s*** inside of it and they would spray it with some fiberglass hardener and then Bigfoot would snort some meth then pissing the Cadillac converter causing it to eat through his pile of s*** leaving multiple holes just like the Cadillac converter supposed to look like! Joe Biden says if you got a problem with it you ain't American he says this is some high-quality s*** we're talking here you can't get s*** like this anywhere else I'm telling you you can't even find this s*** on the streets you have to go searching for In the Backwoods and while we're out there we grab a kid or two you know to play hopscotch and as a rub the hair on my legs and jump up and down on my lap! + 2 let everyone know that this is high quality s*** and that I support it there is going to be a picture of me engraved on each catalytic converter and a picture of me on the box wearing a speedo giving to Boy Scouts a headlock waist-high with the chubby in all serious now the parts you should focus on on welding pieces on the frame is up front where the sway bar the tooth links or couplers that bolted to the frame you want to take them off and weld a new piece into there because those will come out and I was moving down to South Carolina from New York pulling a U-Haul trailer and the U-Haul trailer blew a tire and literally lift it up the back end of my 4Runner with a 250 lb speaker box in the back and literally jerked it back and forth going 55 down the highway I thought I was going to do a 2-ton somersault as the U-Haul trailer pole vault in itself into the air scattering my s*** over the next two miles but got that fixed and later I noticed the trailer hitch was awful close to the ground and I looked underneath and the hitch was still attached to the frame but the frame was not attached to the frame it ripped a section of the frame out where the hitch hooks into the frame because it's so rusted it just can't ripped right out like it was paper so I had it fixed at Lowe's parking lot in Virginia Roanoke Virginia I decided to fix it myself which of course all my tools were in the nose of the U-Haul trailer that was packed floor-to-ceiling front to back you literally could not get a pube in in there I got 20 lb of s*** in a 10 lb bag and I had to unload it to get to my tools and I spent from 12:30 p.m. till 5:30 a.m. in the morning cutting steel drilling steel welding steel not to mention dealing with the 30 people that had stopped and asked me how much for the bicycles because apparently they thought I was having a yard sale I said who the f*** has a yard sale at Lowe's parking lot out of the back of a U-Haul and is cutting steel and welding steel? Good thing I put that new inverter in before I left New York 3000 Watts that thing is amazing that saved my ass right there so basically I took off the rear bumper cover and I took off the body mount bolts and I cut out the whole rear bumper and frame up to the the axle so about 2 Ft worth of frame and the and made up a new one out in the parking lot out of the most cheapest most expensive steel Lowe's had to sell which cost me around probably four hundred bucks all together with the flux wire which I had to go through six seven Rolls I mean what the flux you get what the flux but I put the hitch back on I put the everything back and it looks amazing it's probably more durable now than it was when it was brand new the steals a lot sicker that's for sure but you always want to make sure that you're front part where I said is welded with new pieces of Steel and on the back there's I don't know what you call them but they keep the Axel from going forward or backwards they look like bars with circles on the end that you put bolts through you want to make sure the brackets that they go into or welded really good onto the frame because one of mine came off and made my axle a little cockeyed and what else oh if you ever decide to do a radiator flush just know that the transmission cooler which is on the side of the AC condenser is its own fluid I never actually knew that I thought it worked like a cold plate does with beer where the line goes inside the transmission and the cool radiator fluid goes through it and cools the coil cooling the transmission fluid but I found out the hard way I was putting a second battery in the back of the 4Runner running a 0 gauge cable from the front to the back where the fuse on both ends and I was putting in a new yellow top battery in the front with a new ground and when I was going down to the frame to put the new ground wire on I noticed that there was two aluminum or steel lines that go right across the bottom front and the rest of the line is rubber but the part that's most exposed and it was metal and it was leaking a red fluid I was like oh my radiator fluid is red so I took those lines out put rubber lines in I was like I might as well do a radiator flush while I'm here and it says to do it in reverse and if I never did it in reverse so this wouldn't happen but I hooked the hose up to the reverse line and I'm telling you our water pressure where we lived was like having a fire truck on site cuz the water tanks were right next to our house I literally could shoot the water over our home with a garden hose so I hooked up our garden hose to the reverse line and crank it on and it was running for good 5 seconds and I was like huh where's the water I don't see any but I hear it and I looked underneath my truck and it looked like my truck got into some bad Indian food last night and was and had bubble guts cuz it was coming out bubbly in a Milky brown color it was nasty you know it's coming out of the transmission pan and I was crying literally crying because I thought I had ruined it and I was just getting ready to go camping with my son but not anymore so I found out that it was good that I didn't have the engine running but the bad thing is I never turn the engine on when I was flushing out the water I use my own pump to put the new stuff in and then pump the old stuff out which didn't really do much even though I use 35 gallons and then still found out that it was a pinkish color and I couldn't figure out why well some of the radiator fluid apparently was getting into the transmission cooler somehow maybe I maybe there blew a seal in between I don't know so I cut the original transmission cooler out and just ran it off the secondary one that I had because it was winter time when it should be all right and I put on a magnetic filter inline and replace the transmission filter and the only thing that was wrong was I had a little bit of a shutter when it was going from 3rd to Overdrive but got rid of that easily with that stuff from Advance Auto Parts that little red tube anti shutter stuff and it works immediately I couldn't believe how quick and how easy it worked and for the love of God make sure you take care of your camber bolts and cam Adjusters whatever you got to do spray them with something to keep them clean and lubed up so if you ever have to change the lower control arm that you could reuse those because when you buy the new control arms which I found this out the hard way because I needed a lift and had to drive 40 miles out into the country to use my friends Lyft and it took a day and a half just to get the two lower control arms off even though we cut the bolts inside and out somehow it was magically in there but got it out and went to put the lower control arm in and I was like a where's the hardware my friend said I don't see any what do you mean you don't see any there's none in the Box. So I called Detroit Axle and they said oh we don't sell the hardware with the control arms. I said how do you not sell the Hardware? That's like me selling you a brand new car without the motor and telling you that it runs good but needs motor. She says why don't you use the old ones.? I said are you serious are you really serious right now? I literally had to destroy them to get the control arms out and even if I didn't destroy them getting them out they would not work like they were supposed to because they weren't taken care of and it would just ruin the new control arm in mess up your alignment and tie rods and all that fun stuff so I had to makeshift my own cam adjusters and Camber bolts because nobody sells them except Toyota and Toyota wanted $296 for four bolts and the cam to cam Adjusters I said you must be high if you think I'm paying that! Well beans at my makeshift bolts only held the stuff together as I drove all the way back home with one wheel going one way one will go in the other way skidding and squeaking and all that fun stuff I had to call Toyota the next day and say time to wake and bake because I need those bolts and I ended up buying them so make sure you take care of those and how I do my wheel alignment as I use a 2-foot level for the In-N-Out I just put the level up and down right on the tire that's how you do the in and out and then to do the left to right you need a laser pointer and a 3 foot level and then you zip tie the laser pointer to the level and you put it in the middle of the tire on the back wheel impress the laser pointer and have someone with the two foot level go out about 50 yards or less and line it up with the laser pointer and a laser pointer should be right is high off the ground as where your level is on the Wheel so if you're your levels 14 in off the ground your laser pointer should be hitting that 2 foot level 14 in up on it so you leave the level right where the laser pointers hitting it and then you go to the front wheel and put it on the same spot and you got to make your laser pointer hit the two foot level on the 14 inch mark and you adjust your tie rod until you get to it and then repeat on the other side and it freaking works but remember you have to go out some distance that's why I said 50 yards because it's more accurate the further you go and it cheap and free also you want to keep your rear liftgate actuator sing greased cleaned and oiled up because that thing is a pain in the ass not to mention if you break your rear liftgate window or the the frame work that pushes the window up and down rust out and it breaks so I replaced the rear window which shattered all over top of me because the thing that the bracket that holds the window that pushes it up and down rusted out and when I put the window back into place I bent down to get a part that was going to temporarily hold it in place and when I bet down the window just shattered all over top of me and I just couldn't do anything but laugh my ass off until the lady employee from the gas station comes out and asked me what are you doing you can't do that here I go to what clean up the glass that broke Yeah I broke it on purpose so I could clean it up so you could come out and say don't do that here I remember when I had my first beer idiot. So I basically replace just about everything on the rear liftgate except the motor for the window which now the Center wheel that the cables wrap around popped out of the motor and the cables came undone and the window fell and I can't get them wound back up together and put in there by myself so what I did is being that my son has outgrown His Cadillac Escalade plastic toy truck that he used to drive around in I took the two wheel Motors out of there which ironically has slats I'm the part that turns to where I could slide a cable in the knobs in there and it would hold the cables without coming out and I would use one motor two go up with the window and the other one to go down so I didn't have to keep them together I could separate them and then you don't have to have grooves in the wheels either you just have to make sure the cable doesn't pop off and it works so much better than it did on the original not to mention if you ever need a inverter in your house that goes from AC to DC you could use old Xbox 360 power packs or laptop power packs the Xbox 360 is a little tricky to wire up but it works great so when I work Outdoors like in a pole barn and I only have an extension cord I'll use my light bars with that power pack and it works amazing also if your son likes to ride the brakes you should look into this company called Frozen rotors. Com NASCAR uses mm what they do is they take the rotor in a freezing in liquid nitrogen for three days and it makes the tensile strength stronger so your rotors are guaranteed not to Warp and guaranteed to have your brakes last three times longer and it's only $40 a rotor to freeze it not to buy the rotor. And I must say I went on my FedEx truck from changing my brakes every month and a half and my rotors every 3 months 2 changing my brakes every 7 months now and never having to change the rotors these things are phenomenal when I sold my route I took him off and took him with me I don't know what I'm going to put them on or what they're compatible with but it came off a GMC Savana another thing also is the marker lights the running lights or whatever for some reason they run Wicked hot in now it has melted the inside of the cover like liquid and the bulb keeps blowing and I'm not sure what to do but I think I'm just going to put an inline relay I see if that does the trick cuz I just found out also get my mass airflow sensor stopped working and every time I try to look up a Toyota 4Runner mass air flow sensor wire diagram I kept getting every other vehicle but the 4Runner and I even tried to say a different vehicle in the hopes that I might get the 4Runner but nope not to mention that the wire connector that goes in the mass air flow sensor just crumbled apart and if you ever need to find a new one of those don't buy the new ones that are online go to a junkyard and the only one that is compatible with the 4Runner V8 is the Toyota Sienna van I believe it's the same year 2006 in it doesn't matter what the guy at the desk tells you what cars are compatible they're not they're not even close I spent 5 hours in the rain and cold going through every vehicle there over 500 and finally found one in the 2006 Toyota Sienna but the wire colors were different so make sure you take a picture of everything before you cut anything and your best bet is to go to a mechanic and ask him to print you out a wire diagram for it and then come to find out the 12 volt wire on it didn't have any power help I was supposed to trace it back to the fuse panel but the fuse panel had power but it didn't at the sensor so that means the line was broken somewhere in between and I took one look at that wiring route that Toyota did and I was like yeah no there's no way in hell that I'm going to be able to trace this back through all the tape and plastic covers and crap over the years has built up. So I ran a new wire from the battery to an inline fuse to the sensor and it works phenomenal not to mention also that I got a throttle cable which they say not to buy the cheap ones but I did I got one for $79 and this thing works better than any of the 300 to $400 pedal commanders or or the other crap the $79 piece of gold is amazing it goes from economy mode the normal mode then into 1.1 to where you can adjust it up to one point nine. Then you go into sport mode which starts out at 2.1 goes up to 2.9 and then it goes into race mode from 3.1 to 3.9. and I'm telling you, I accidentally just dusted I mean left a South Carolina state trooper I was getting caught up in the passing Lane buy a unmarked cop riding the fast lane by driving next to someone in the slow lane they do this as a set up so if they want to pull somebody over they have to have them break the law first so they ride the passing Lane in order to piss you off and hope that you get pissed off and break the law so they can pull you over well wouldn't unmarked was doing that the guy in the slow lane realized what the guy was doing so he sped up so we could get by as soon as he sped up the guy behind him shot the gap so I decided to do the same thing so I put it in race mode and I looked over my shoulder real quick and I didn't see anything but apparently a State Trooper was flying up behind me about 45 50 miles an hour and I just hammered it in left him she couldn't even catch up he was so stunned he threw on his siren so I would hear it and he said I thought you were trying to evade me and he didn't believe that I just had a 4.7 in there he made me pop my hood to show him he thought I had some nitrous oxide in there I got no I don't but he also thought that a radar detector was a police scanner any creepy thing is this guy Carries a Gun he was trying to tell me that they were illegal and I said yeah I might have to call bulshit on that one they're not illegal and I told him I go it's not like it pinpoints where you are I go it's more for safety reasons it tells me if there's someone in my blind spot because everybody dial usually has the side sensors for the blind spot which make my thing go off to tell me that someone's there. And then I have these little blue lights on my exhaust tips that are very dim and then I have a little blue light on my amplifier that I got pulled over in South Carolina for and they called it educated me and South Carolina law that you are not allowed to have any blue lights inside or outside of your vehicle because of the state troopers have blue lights. I said not to be a smart-ass sir or I'm not being a smart-ass but ambulances and fire trucks have red lights so every time I put on my breaks does that mean I'm breaking the law he said no because they're only on temporarily I said no your running lights are on all the time he goes yeah but they're reflective but you're what does that even mean he goes all yet you can't you can't have a TV in there either I said why not he goes because you can't watch TV while you're driving I said I know that I do how am I going to watch a TV he goes what's it for then I go it's for the reverse camera so when I put my vehicle in reverse and I look in my mirror I can see what's out back like it's like I'm really looking in the mirror Outback but it's on the TV and it only comes on when I put it in reverse so how is that illegal he goes all the way there is he goes you can't even have TVs in the headrest and I'm just shaking my head like old bulshit while this cop was being super nice and the other one was armed to the teeth like he was getting prepared for war or The Purge and he was giving me that look like go ahead make a move motherfuker I will fill you full of lead I'm just itching. So I can't have those blue lights because apparently at some point I'm going to master driving down the highway in Reverse at 70 miles an hour with my three little dim blue lights and people are going to pull over because they think I'm a cop well if I can do that drive 70 in reverse they should pull over anyway just out of the sheer talent and skill that it took to master something like that so I don't see what the big deal is if you can't tell the difference between a novelty light and a police light then you shouldn't be driving you should be a stay-at-home person well you wear a leather helmet with a dildo strap to the top while you Club yourself in the head with a nother dildo while you listen to Yanni's greatest hits as you call yourself a dick head. So the best places to weld are the front where the sway bar is the bar support bars that hold the rear axle to the frame and your part between your axle and bumper rear bumper that part of the frame and take care of your camber bolts cam adjusters for rear door actuator and make sure your AC condenser is getting plenty of wind because when I put in my third string transmission cooler just so I didn't burn my transmission out Towing the trailer down here well it works but now my AC doesn't work because it's hotter than hell here literally I mean when it's 80 out they must be going by Celsius because I've been an 80 and I can deal with it but this 80 is on a whole nother level it is sickening how f****** hot it is South Carolina's 80 degrees is like New York hundred and five after it rains that's how f****** bed is here and being that the air can't get into my AC condenser because of the transmission cooler it causes the tray the AC to blow warm air so what I have to do is either throw a cup of water into the AC condenser or now I have a little box fan that fits wedges in their perfectly and I run the cord inside to my inverter and run it off of that and it keeps it working good until I can move it. Sorry so long and sorry for all the run-on sentences but this is voice to text but I hope everything is helpful and somewhat funny.! So best of luck to you and good luck with your son in college take care!

The type of steel used in the construction of the frame has little to do with the corrosion problem. Having worked in the metal finishing business for more than a few years, I can tell you for certain that the root cause is the finishing (painting in this case) process.

As for Corten steel, you are 100% incorrect to assume that's what the frames are made of. Not even close in fact. Here's what Corten is:

Following as well. Just picked up an 07 with mild rust, all surface as far as I can tell. The only worrying spot I've found is the front shock towers. The structural portion facing the engine bay looks pretty bad... black coating is chipped and flaking, and I can pick off small pieces. I'm not used to seeing this kind of stuff being an AL-raised chap! If y'all have any advice for where to take a rusty vehicle for repair in the north AL/TN area, let me know.

Scrape it, sand it, prime it, paint it and you should be good to go, especially where you live.

Has anybody actually bought and welded those frame inserts in place?
