Technicial help...my clock keeps resetting time??
I need some technical help...my clock in my 4th gen keeps resetting it's time. I reset it this morning, drove to work, used it to run errands on lunch. I drove it home tonight, picked up the mail and when I started it again the clock had reset it'self to 1:00 which is the standard reset time. I installed a retrofit source hid kit in the runner. I used the supplied wiring harness and attached the grounds as indicated. I used the body grounds above each front wheel well. I simply removed the 10mm bolts and installed the wiring harness over the factory harness and reinstalled the bolts. Every other electronic function works except that my clock keeps gaining time and then reset its'self?? I did happen to remove the grounds without unhooking the battery terminals. Don't know if this hurt something?? Anybody have any ideas?

Did the clock resetting occur after you installed the HID kit or is it just something you did after it started happening?
What is your battery health like?

It was never an issue until I put the kit in... I will check my battery today and see what the cca's are. I was wondering if that could be the cause of it. I was thinking about that but the radio does not lose any of it's station presets so I am not sure if they are on the same bus system??

Double check that your grounds are clean and tight, where does the harness plug into.

My wifes 04 limited v8 has an issue that the dome light/running board light fuse blows about every other month. Whenever that particular fuse is blown, the clock resets to 1:00 every time the truck gets turned on. If your dome light is still working and the fuse is good, then I can't help you. But if not, replace that fuse, I guess it's tied in to the same slot.

I know my grounds are clean and tight because I double checked them. I even took them off and sanded them down with sand paper to ensure a tight connection that was clean. I will check the battery tomorrow and let you guys know. I will also check my fuses tomorrow!

I just noticed my clock doing the same thing at random times. Very strange. But this post caught my attention - my dome lights have never worked since I bought the truck a few months ago. If you press them with your finger, they work. But opening the doors, the front dome light will not light up. I'll have to track down that fuse and see if I can cure two problems at once. Thanks for the tip!

It's slot #17 in the engine bay fuse box, a mini 10A.

Funny you should mention this... We had a cold spell here for a week that was a bit below freezing I tested the battery at work today and found my battery had 340 cold cranking amps versus the rated 750 I needed a new battery so I bought one from our toyota store! It was a white panasonic battery so I think it may of been the original battery as the new one does not look the same...I installed it today so I will check and see if it keeps time now these next few days... Thanks for the tips so far

So my wife is driving it today and she said the clock is back to it's usual antics again I will check the fuses today later on. I don't know if this factors into the diagnosis either but right after I installed the hid kit the defrost button under the clock that is for the heater mirros and rear windows was inop. You could push the button and the orange light would not light up. It was this way for a day and then it started working again??

So I checked all my fuses and they checked out ok?? I am not good with electrical diagnosis so I think I may take it to the local dealer to have them do some diag on it. Any one have any other suggestions?

Dealer is going to tell you to remove the HID kit and that's what causing it most likely (probably without bothering to test it too thoroughly.)
Have you tried unplugging the HID and running the vehicle only during the day and seeing if the clock does not act up?
Do you know what circuits the HID is tapping into? You said that it is a plug and play unit, where is it it plugged into?

I am an employee of the same dealership group that owns the Toyota store and I know the service manager personally so I think they would most likely do their due diligence in diagnosis before blowing me off. The kit has 2 relays that your mount in the engine bay. The relays have a wiring harness coming out of them that has a 2 grounds as well as a positive battery terminal connection. The plug on the ends of the wires plug into the relays which have an output that the bulb end plugs into... It seemed like a really straight forward design but I am stumped as I am really crappy at vehicle electronics. I can wrench all day but my electrical diag skills are lacking. There is one plug on the end of the harness that I can't figure out where it goes and I assumed it was an extra. The plug is the same size as the head lamp socket or to the relays.I posted a link to the relay wiring harness I used of the web site. This kit seems really well done compared to the other kits I have used in the past. I know this clock thing is pretty small in terms of everything overall but it is driving me nuts.

Hmm... I wonder what they are considering "Input from Car" as that may be part of the issue if it is tapped into the dome light circuit somehow...
I would try running without the HIDs for a while (if you can revert back to standard headlmps for night driving that would be safest) and see if that helps; if it doesn't we can rule out the kit. It'd be the easiest, non-technical way of testing the HID system and its interaction with your vehicle.
