Rear spring advice (now a Toytec 2.0HD discussion with before and after photos)

Hey all...

Yesterday I got my hands on a used RIGd Ultraswing. I have been waiting nearly 6 months for another company to make mine and they never came through... long story short I am now set up!

After taking the rig for a short ride I definitely notice some lackluster handling characteristics of the added weight in the rear. With the weight of the tire carrier, fold down table/molle panel, and spare I probably added 100-120lbs hanging off the back.

It's also important to note I tow a 2,350lb boat/trailer in the summer with a tongue weight of around 175-200lbs. (all of this is within spec with the Ultraswing's ability)

Right now I have a Toytec 2.5" spring up front w/ 5100 struts. In the rear I have stock coils and a 2" daystar spacer and 5100 shocks. I also have Air Lift 1000 helper bags (with a blown line... which I have a replacement coming for)

I really like the stance and height of the vehicle as it sits now and I want to try to replicate that as best I can. I am researching rear spring options and would love some insight, especially from someone who tows a percentage of the time.

Right now I am looking at:

A) "RCC2.0 - Toytec Superflex Rear Coils

These coils are custom made to our specs for a stock like ride and great flex and performance off road.

Provide approximately 2" of rear Lift
10% increase in load capacity/spring rate."

with this option I probably need to keep the Air Lift bags in and inflated all the time.

B) "RCC2.0HD - Toytec Superflex Heavy-duty Rear Coils

Provides approximately 2.0" of Rear Lift (with 150 -200LBS additional weight)
SuperflexHD coil springs have a 25% increase above stock load capacity/spring rate."

and C) Whichever Dobinson spring would work best for my application

I would love to ditch the Air Spring helper bags... after the line blew on my way home while in tow I was a little disappointed. I thought I ran the line far enough away from the exhaust. I guess they weren't joking when they said keep it 8 inches away. I was like 4 inches away and it melted.

Vehicle is 2004 V6 sport ... Thanks for your input.

RCC2.0 definitely too weak for your weight. I ditched them because I was constantly hitting my bump stops off-road fully loaded with camping gear. I now have Icon Overland dual rated springs and love them. Feel good empty and fully loaded. But they give about 3" empty (no rear bumper)

I am looking at the Old man emu 896 which says 2" lift at constant 330lb which may be a touch stiff when nit in tow, but I am OK with that.

I had stock rear coils and the same 2" rear spacers. When i added the offset hitch gate rear swing out bumper, a second spare hanging off the back, and 10 gallons of gas on the rear hitch the back was having similar issues like you.

I went with OME 2895 medium coils and was really happy with it. The ride height is the same as the 2" spacer but with extra capacity. It is sometimes too stiff when I am unloaded and commuting to work.

In your situation I would avoid 896 heavies and go with something in the medium range then use the air bags for towing.

Thanks for the input. I ended up ordering the Toytec HD... Which says 150 to 200lb constant load... And ordered the kit to repair my air line. I felt the OME 896 would be too stiff 97% of the time. I'll update after install. Springs are due in Wednesday

I have the C59-701Vs and I love them. I have about 350-400 pounds of static weight added. I don't think you can go wrong with Dobinsons. I'd consider the C59-327 for your additional static weight plus added towing support.

Nice! I want something like that but need to decide on my rear carrier first.

FWIW I wanted the Detours of Maine one. I waited 24 weeks and he hadn't started and wouldn't commit to a date. Initially It was supposed to be less than half that amount of time. Others I have spoken to have waited 28 weeks with no ETA in sight.

The RIGd one sits a little farther away from the body of the truck and is slightly heavier which are my only gripes. It does have a bunch of really great add ons available.

I got the toytec 2.0HDs installed... My word they a tall. Looks like I am going to go to the 2nd notch on the Bilstein 5100s up front now...

Comparison shots w/Daystar spacers... And OEM springs.

These are Toytec 2.0’s with daystar spacers and a Wilco Hitchgate. The trailer is about 175lbs tongue weight. Should be close to what you’re looking at.

Your 4Runner looks great! How's the ride now with those HD springs? I need a better spring for towing too.

Thank you!

I love the ride feel. They are incredibly tall. Much taller than I expected. I literally just finished adjusting the front Bilstein perches up 1 from the bottom setting and it made things much better overall. Stay tuned for that update.

So here is where I am at now for anyone following this thread of future viewers.

I installed the Toytec 2.0HD rear springs yesterday and that brought my rear ride height to 24.5" in the rear. (measured from center of hub to bottom of fender) ... The fronts were only 22" measured the same way. That was with Toytec 2" springs in the front on Bilstein 5100's set on the lowest spring perch.

TODAY: I removed the front struts and went up 1 notch on the spring perches.

I now measure 23" from center of hub to bottom of fender.

Here is a photo of before and after so you can visualize the difference. I am happy with the result now. I have only driven it 2 miles or so but it didn't ride harsh or feel too stiff. It's interesting to see/feel how each tweak changes the behavior of the truck.
