Oil Pressure Gauge?

I hooked up my Scan Gauge II this week. Was hoping to get an oil pressure reading, but as far as I can tell, you can’t.

So, I started searching to see if anyone has added a mechanical oil pressure gauge to a 4th gen 4Runner. So far, I haven’t found any information. Found stuff on Camrys, 3rd gen 4Runners, but nothing for a 4.0l.

Anyone know if this has been done and posted on here? My Google-fu sucks.

Thanks!

Nothing?

I guess I’ll find the sending unit and see if there’s room to T it off for a braided stainless steel line.

I saw your question yesterday and searched but only saw 3rd Gens, no 4th Gens other than a mention of one V8 owner who added an oil gauge but no write up of how he did his.

Sorry, I don't check this on the weekends. I have one on my 4th gen, just a standard cheapo one I needed as I was having oil pressure issues. Put a T on the sensor near the oil filter, it sticks up...can't miss it. I can take pics if you'd like.

Gauge I'm using:
Amazon.com: Equus 6244 2" Mechanical Oil Pressure Gauge, Black: Automotive

This is needed to connect the gauge to the T:
Amazon.com: GlowShift 1/8 BSPT Male to 1/8-27 NPT Female Gauge Sensor Sender Thread Adapter Reducer: Automotive

Pretty sure this is the T I bought:
1/8" BSPT Oil Pressure Sensor Tee to NPT Adapter Turbo For Honda Mitsubishi | eBay

cant believe toyota doesnt have an oil psi gauge or sensor on these 4runners, just a dummy light. oil psi is one of those important readings like temp so you can monitor what the engine is doing over time & identify a potential problem before its too late.

adding a mech gauge is a good idea, thanks for the links above.

Yep have to change from NPT to BSPT. The reason they don't put gauges in my opinion is on the V8 for example the oil pressure at idle is 5 psi. Old school guys like me would think the V8 was shot if it only has 5 psi oil pressure.

Thanks for the info!!!

I’ll probably find an Auto Meter that matches the interior. Hopefully Jegs has a braided stainless kit with the British conversion.

Braided hose is probably a good upgrade but this was supposed to be a temporary thing but now I like having it. The gauge actually matches quite well color wise. Pics below.

Did you drill and tap there or is there a plug?

I see what you did. Moved the factory to the rear of that tube and put the mechanical in the factory location.

Dear God, I hope that hose doesnt pop off and spray you in the face with 200* hot oil.

Maybe just maybe oil pump failure isnt an issue toyota has a Problem with. Considering toyota engines outlast every other car brand, why would they need to have an oil pressure gauge?

This is a solution looking for a problem.

Nothing to drill and tap with the parts I listed.

LOL, meh.... It's been on there for over 2 years and I watch it and the gauge. The tubing is actually pretty thick but a metal or braided hose would be better. I needed the gauge because of a flickering oil light issue that was a real oil pressure problem. The pressure would start off fine then drop off after warming up. Ended up being a sludging issue I assume because the former owner didn't like maintenance, I picked it up pretty cheap. Cleaned all the sludge from the top end and the plastic like hardened oil from the pickup tube which helped some. The real fix was running motor flush as directed on bottle. It seems the pressure relief valve in the pump was sticking open. Been good since then and my daily driver for 2+ years.

Add a qt of MMO marvel mystery oil to each oil change. That will slowly clean out the remaining crud. Good stuff
