Rockauto website can be weird. I have had the same issue with shipping from diff locations. I close it down and come back later to check the shopping cart and suddenly they all ship from the same warehouse.

I put 2010-2014 calipers on my 04 v8 sport for less than $320 shipped. Look around, some dealers go almost 35% off list online. Remans are good for 20-30k, new oem usually get 60-80k at least. For me the extra $$ was well worth it. Running remans in the rear for close to 25k, will most likely go new there when they fail. If part number is only 10 digits, it's new. If it's 12 and ends in 84, it's a reman.

I agree with most of this concept too. Plenty of online (Toyota) dealers will sell at far more discounted rate than my local dealer.

The aftermarket (new and rebuilt) use an oem casting to start and use whatever cheap guts they can source. They customize the exterior for their brand and fluctuate the price accordingly.

I bought a pair (oem) from a salvage yard online and the Toyota caliper rebuild kit from a dealer. The kit comes with the caliper boots (2 types), piston seals, bore seals and grease. It also comes with the little boots for the bolts. DOES NOT INCLUDE PISTONS

Oem pads. Came with the pins and clips and the spreaders.


YouTube is your friend for the process. 45 min sans paint.
Rebuild kit, Brake clean, wire wheel, pic tool, scotchbrite cloth, tap for the bleeders and new bleeders.
$150 done


My best advise for this approach is to pay close attention to two elements.

1. OEM casting. If this is overlooked then you may as well have just bought used remans.

2. The pistons. NO RUST. They should be corrosion free. There will be some brake dust residue but it should wipe off easily.

The $150 cost you posted, is that for 2 or 4 calipers, and does that include the new OEM pads?

No cores necessary. This allowed me to do all of the work first and minimal downtime for the rig.

I bought brand-new aftermarket calipers several years ago from Advance Auto, they're definitely non-OEM castings. Raybestos now sells new castings (no cores needed), they're probably from the same overseas manufacturer.

I went with the (new) Raybestos Element 3 coated calipers after years of dealing with the crappy remans, couldn't be happier.

If I may ask how long have you had them? Miles?. At this point Im just trying to get good brakes and want them to last until I can rebuild my damn life and move back up to something a bit more fitting to my family. I did a lot of work the I got it and this summer shes gonna need some more love and If I can manage Ill strip the plastic flares off and repaint them just to freshen it up again.

Just replaced the calipers, rotors and pads this weekend after my passenger side one stuck on me on Friday. Got them from Advanced with the warranty since it seems to be a common occurrence on these things.

Pulled the trigger today. Went with the new Raybestos element3 calipers. Read lots of reviews of them seem to be all positive, the price was around what I would pay after cores and all that and saves me having to send them back.

Says limited iifetime so guess we shall see how that goes. Paid $726 and some change after a coupon and shipping.

Also ordered a full 6 piece stainless steel brake hose set cause why not.

Always replace calipers when doing 4runner brakes - or you'll be doing the job over within 1 month.

Cardone kinda sucks. I use Cardone remans (not just brakes... PS pumps, racks etc) all the time for work, but only when I have to. A fair amount are defective out of the box. I just put one of their new PS pumps on my 4runner when I did the Head Gasket job and it is fine for now... But I always wince when I use Cardone. YMMV

More crap advice from someone who has proven they don't know what they are talking about (see "Captsolo" banned, this is the same guy)

Do calipers when necessary IE sticking pistons, pistons that retract hard when doing the brake job, or when mileage becomes a concern.

If you wince when you use Cardone, Dorman must be good for full cardiac arrest. I refuse to use their junk.
