NAPA Power Steering Pump

I took a gamble on a used power steering pump with a 6 month warranty from LKQ, and it looks like I am going to have to exercise it. Main seal in the middle of the PS pump is weeping. Its not a bad leak, but it is a leak.

Before I go spend real money on an OEM pump, does anyone have experience with the NAPA ones? This particular part is easy enough to swap out I'd consider getting it from them just to have the lifetime warranty.

Sounds like you got unlucky. I pulled one off a GX470 and it's been going strong for half a year. NAPA in general has a good reputation although a bit pricey for certain items. I have not personally gotten a PS pump there.

Yeah, I did get unlucky. My guess is the seal dried out from lack of use with it sitting on a shelf at LKQ.

Napa is actually pretty reasonable for a reman unit. Unfortunately their parts aren't as good as they once were, but is what it is.

I also grabbed a LKQ donor from a GX and its been goin strong for a year now. I figured GX owners would likely have gone to service it at the dealer more than the 4Runner owners. May want to try another LKQ gamble?

That's exactly what I did with mine. After driving the back half of the steering pump is wet and their is oil around the seam between the two halves.

My best bet is that it sat on a shelf drained for a while and the gasket dried out.

Scotty Kilmer warns don't ever replace a PSP with used one. Must be NEW. Reason is they have to hold a lot of pressure

Amazon has new for 4runners for $100. Amazon.com: Power Steering Pump For Toyota 4Runner & Hilux Pickup Truck 3.0L V6 1988 1989 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 - BuyAutoParts 86-00198AN New: Automotive

Having said this, I use NAPA oil in my 4runner.

Although I have no experience involving NAPA PS Pumps, I know their CV warranties are awesome. Walk-in with broken, walk-out with new. Good luck, Cheers!

I agree with this but not due to pressure, more so because of the lack of knowledge of how the system was run. Did theu actually use the correct fluid, didn't mix up fluids, and how was it driven? You can overheat a power steering system and burn the fluid too- rare but can happen. Also, the pump could have had a slight leak to startvwith but was cleaned up and placed on a shelf- worse case they sell it as a core if it sat for too long. For the cost of an aftermarket reman, I would go that route rather than used. However take Scotty Kilmer with a grain of salt. I have been a mechanic for over 20+ years working on all kinds of vehicles including HD truck such as Freightliner and Kenworths all the way done to the cheaper imports. Kilmer gives some good information but he also is WAY out there on a lot of stuff. Also, in his mind, he is the only mechanic worth a crap.
