Yeah, this too. The valve stem on my 2001 was so deteriorated that when I unscrewed the cap, the whole thing broke off. Combined with the flat tire I was attempting to replace, I would have been screwed if I wasn't at home.

NoVa,
I will be carrying two spares for the trip so that should cover any surprises. All less than 4 years old and in good condition.

Honestly Toyota designs parts with the intention of lasting their full lifespan and not needing to be prematurely replaced out of fear for catastrophic failure. If you go through and replace a bunch of parts designed to last 50 years with aftermarket stuff that might last 2 years you're doing yourself a disservice. Other than fluids and timing belt everything else should be "replace as needed". Throwing more parts at it is just money down the drain.

Pcos55,
I normally am not as worried but with this high of a mileage I am doing my best to hedge my bets. I cannot recall where I read it but Toyota designed trucks for a 20 year lifespan before major overhauls. Given my high mileage on a 13 year old truck I was looking for helpful opinions.

Toyota's normal build spec is a 15-year service life with normal usage. That said, the Land Cruiser is built to a 25-year service life w/ offroad usage.

Obviously these trucks age well but a lot of us are coming up that milestone. That said, I'd be much less worried about overall mileage and more concerned with level and quality of maintenance - which you've clearly done very well.

Toyota was amused with my dad when he asked if he needed to consider an engine rebuild/overhaul on his last Tacoma. That truck had 300k miles and ran like a top when he traded it.

Complete hearsay, Toyota has never put out those numbers.

Again more hearsay. Toyota would never put out lifespan numbers because they have no relevance. They don't come with an expiration date. There are plenty of perfectly running 20, 30, 40 year old Toyotas out there with mostly original parts.

My helpful opinion is to stop wasting your money on parts that aren't needed. These trucks will last until either they're totaled, run without fluids, or rust turns them frame to dust.

Here's a list of what I have done and if I'm missing something major please chime in. Within the last year I have done the following:

Denso spark plugs and inspected coils
All new coolant hoses, fan clutch, thermostat, and new red fluid.
Timing Belt done 2 years ago at 483,000 miles
JBA UCAs with new bushings and Moog ball joints.
LCA new ball joints and bushings.
Aftermarket CV axles and new cv axle differential seals and new fluid.
All new sway bar bushigns and links.
new oem air filter and cabin filter
new power steering (toyota atf) fluid and used GX470 pump from parts yard
All new OEM Toyota brake lines except two custom extended lines and DOT 3 fluid.
Powerstop front pads and rotors
Durobump stops
Inner and Outer Tie Rod ends
Cam tab gussets
Spindle Gussets
PML High capacity transmission pan and new Toyota WS fluid
Talon's Garage 1/4" thick aluminum transmission skid plate (on order)
OME medium 2895 rear coils
New Autozone gold battery
rear trailing arm skids

Things I want to do before I go:
rear diff fluid swap

I carry a tire patch kit and air compressor at all times plus a self jumping battery. Then the usual assorted tools.
I didn't see anything regarding the transmission fluid. Have you changed it ever? I know that the manual states "lifetime" transmission fluid, but the word "lifetime" is defined as 7 years in California.

With the new pan, how are you checking the fluid level to insure it has the correct amount?

Back in my day, blowing a tranny meant you had car trouble.

From my research on toyota trucks it seems if maintenance is followed and you don't live in an area with a lot of snow/salted roads, these cars can run 500k miles pretty easily.

My other car is a Porsche 911 and older 996 turbos are hitting 300k miles on original motors and trannies. The owner stayed on top of all maintenance obviously, but those cars are also built bullet proof. Maintenance goes a loooong way.

This is an inspiration for me. I just ticked off 250k on my '03 V8. Your list of maintenance items is extensive and represents goals for me. Did you do these yourself?
