03 4Runner Multi-Information Display Issues

Hey guys,

I've got a problem, no it's not the backlight, I've replaced those before (how damn easy is it to take that panel off?! It's awesome)

Today on my drive to work, I look down and my Multi Info Display is lit, but all that's showing the time. Also all 3 of the climate controls are black. I had the control on Auto before and I can hear the air blowing. So that's working.

I looked through the manual to see if there is a fuse, can't seem to pin point which one controls that unit.

I also read a couple other threads and one hits the nail on the head of what I'm talking about, although he states the dealership told him it was the AC Control Booster, except it's blowing air, as though it's still on Auto, seems like it's just the display and lights.

Ac, multi information display went out, and more.m

It's g4run whom I'm referencing.

Any help would be awesome. Thanks guys, I'll attach a pic to help.

OK, I have a couple of questions for you:

First off, don't be insulted, but have you tried cycling through the "modes?" If so, does anything change?

Second, you say the air is blowing but does the climate control seem to be working? IOW, can you push up on the temp and it gets warmer, push down and the AC kicks in, etc? Can you change the blowers to the different modes (feet, feet/face, defrost, etc?) Can you change the blower speed?

If so, it seems like your computer is working but the LCD display is not. Unfortunately, I don't know of any way to fix that other than to replace the whole HVAC control panel, which I think can be expensive (though I think you can find one in a junkyard for a lot less than what Toyota will hit you for.)

That's the bad news, I guess, but the good news is that if your HVAC is actually working, you don't have to fix it right away, you can wait until you can afford the parts.

Martin,

I wish that first idea was the one, nothing happens when I cycle through 'modes' or ever press and hold 'reset'

I couldn't tell if the blower was going this round as I think it's on Auto and it's cold out so it's not warm enough to kick on.

All the lights are off on the HVAC system. I pulled all the fuses I could that so much as mention they are associated with the HVAC system.

Also I did play with all the buttons to see if that changed anything and it didn't. Seems like no signal is making it to the computer from the unit.

I'm hoping maybe there is a short somewhere? And yeah, seems like you might be right on the HVAC system. I'm going to pull that unit off at lunch and see if I can make heads or tails of it, doubt it but worth the try.

Sucks to say it but it seems like the HVAC control unit is fried. Expensive to buy a new one (I want to say around $1000) but you should be able to find one from a wrecked vehicle that works.

Looks like you have a limited so that may narrow your choices. I doubt that you could swap an SR5 unit into the limited (though I guess you could always try.)

Thanks for the help guys, one more odd thing, the rear wiper doesn't work either... strange that that would run through that unit somehow.

I do have one more thing I'm going to try, my GF has a '08 Limited, so I'm going to swap out her's and see if it works in mine, that should tell me if it's the unit or maybe a relay?

Thanks again, I'll keep you updated.

Ok, so now it gets more interesting. I tried my gf's control panel and it didn't work either. I then took mine and it worked in hers.

So I started with relays, using the good relays from the other 4runner, couldn't seem to figure it out. The odd thing is that the rear wiper isn't working either. Is there a relay that controls both?

I'm lost right now. Happy to find it's not the panel. But starting to get worried it's something more...anything I should check?

It's almost as if the controls are in ACC mode (when the key is turned but ignition isn't on) even though you are in ON mode. Not sure how to help but have attached the '04 wiring diagrams for reference. Maybe there is a problem common fuse between the controls and the rear window body ECU?

My 06' has half the display light going out (dim) for a while (original replaced under warranty, so I guess they only last so long.

How on earth do you get that bugger out of the dash console?

Forget getting a response from this guy. He's only done four posts in nine months. No, he's not coming back until, maybe he has another problem that requires our help.

Found the IG1 15A fuse blown under the dash. How the directionals, the display, etc are interrelated are beyond me, but everything works now

This was my solution as well. I hauled a horse trailer a short distance at night. Parked it that night and unhooked the trailer. The next morning I had no a/c controls or display, no turn signals, no cruise control, and gear light indicators did not light up. I checked every fuse except the ECU and IG1thinking they would have nothing to do with it. Well IG1 15A blown.

Similar Issue

Nothing but the clock is working on the climate control panel. However, the A/C is running on it's most recent position...So at least I have the defrost setting going on cold air. Did anyone else find a solution to this? I am guessing I need to replace the panel but maybe it is something else also?
