Towing an Airstream 22fb

Hi All,

Anyone know if it's advisable to tow the following Airstream with my 2006 V6? Is it cutting it too close? How do I calculate how much weight will be in the 4runner? TIA! 2011 Airstream Sport 22FB Trailer : Reviews, Prices and Specs : RV Guide

I have a 17 foot boat that weighs 2350 on trailer... I drive it about 45 minutes to get it to camp. Personally I wouldn't want to tow anything heavier with my V6. Ymmv

My concern would be driving on windy days. That trailer will be pushing you all over the road.

Have to factor in the weight of water and sewage tanks, all the gear going in the trailer. I would not tow it with a V6 4gen.

By the time you add all your camping gear I think you will be well past the limits of the V6. It's been a few years since I have had a TT but I recall that many manufacturers don't include things like the propane tanks and awning when they post their dry weights. If the V6 4Runner was all you had to tow with I would make the seller follow you to a place with scales to determine the real weight of the trailer. You can't trust the label inside the camper. Before I would tow anything of any real weight I would add the biggest trans cooler you can find and add a trans temp gauge. More than likely this would be the first thing that fails and a rebuilt trans can be very expensive these days. Makes me glad that I have my old 7.3 dually that only has 160K miles on it if I need to tow anything more than a lawn mower that's what I'll be hitching up.

I tow a 4200lb dry weight trailer with mine, it has a dual axle with electric brakes. My 06' V6 has the slightly bigger 5th Gen brakes, a UHAUL ATF cooler and a WDH.

You will do fine but I recommend a stiffer spring or a Timbren setup in the rear and the V8 hitch. If you can't find the hitch, buy one from UHAUL or online since the crossmember hitch is way stronger and meant for a WDH setup.

Too heavy, especially if you want to put anything in there. Not that it wont work but its going to burden your 4R a lot. Biggest Airstream for a 4Runner would be the Basecamp.

From what i heard the 4R handles 3500lbs or under well.

Thanks all, looks like I'd probably be better off going for a lighter weight trailer. I'm not trying to tow at the max of the 4runner (would prefer to have a larger margin of error than to be overweight).
