4th gen buyers guide ?
so I have had 3rd gens since 2004 so I am very familiar with them and modding them.
however my current 3rd gen is a POS and not reliable, tranny and electric brake system acting up to name a few... and has rust so its got to go.
I have several long trips this summer, the 3rd gen wont make it.
so a neighbor has a 4th gen SR5 sport. 2005. 170k,v-6, 2nd owner gray with cloth interior...smoker so it stinks.... and has owned since 2011. Selling cause he wants something bigger, can tow more weight and less miles. He would not say what he has towed.
he is asking top of blue book at 10k. Wont budge....only other 4th gen up here is same year at 14k , but its lifted with an ARB bumper and about 50k more miles.
3rd gen prices are going nuts and are very hard to find up here in north alaska, anygood. sell in a day.
the stero speaker on driver door is static for about half the test drive and then is fine....newer head unit ( 2018), all else work.
the tire pressure light is on, he says he ignores it as dealer quoted him over 600 2 years ago...i read the system can be bypassed....does that light on effect other things like traction control etc ?
4wd works fine....has to up here
so is there a buyers guide....or what should I be on the look out for...
timing chain life, head gaskets...
thanks
original springs/shocks/suspension....he has done nothing to it.

Off the top of my head:
• Head gaskets are an issue pre-2006, check build date for late 2005
• Cycle 4WD to ensure 4L and center diff lock are operational
• Check for rust, esp under the radiator support cross-member and along the frame (AC drain, etc.)
• You'll like want to refresh that suspension, does it have XREAS?
• Can confirm that TPMS is easy to bypass
Good luck!

what is XREAS ? How can I tell.
its an early 2005
ive read they have a lower ground clearnace than a 3rd gen and if I need to refresh the suspension I sure I can bump it up some.

How to tell if your truck has XREAS
If an early '05, head gaskets could be an issue unless already changed.

carfax agrees with all ive been told. and its out of washington..a low rust state....and has only been in alaska for the past 1.5 years. up until about 3 years ago toyota dealers did all work...even wiper blades and flat tires.
it is at 170k and had the 150k service done at dealer....what ever that covers...
yes it has xreas and yes it nees shocks now
im just reluctant because im so used to 3rd gens where I could do most of the work.....and this looks like I can do less of the work on this rig...things look more complicated and less user friendly
arggg.....im reluctant but need to do something soon...

I've had a 3rd gen for a long time as well, and am intimately familiar with them. I just bought a 4th gen a month ago after looking for awhile.
Here's what I was looking at because I wanted something extremely reliable like my 3rd gen. Working on these isn't much different really, especially if you are coming from an 01-02 that does have more electronics than the earlier 3rd gens.
No 2005 or older V6 models, and no early 2006 V6 models because of the head gasket issue. It may or may not happen, but I didn't want to deal with it so I essentially limited it to 2007+.
I love the power and sound of the V8, but I didn't want to deal with the cracked exhaust manifold issue. I also didn't want to mess with a timing belt. The V6 gets a little better gas mileage and is easier to work on space wise.
Check for rust just like you would on a 3rd gen, they have the same rust issues.
Don't worry about XREAS. If it's working it's great for on road handling. If it isn't working you can replace it with regular shocks.
Check the 4wd to make sure it operates in both hi and lo. Check the center diff lock.
There is a driveshaft clunk that is pretty common on these. Sometimes greasing it solves it, sometimes it doesn't and you'll need to replace components. Toyota has a new redesigned version that runs like $300 if I remember correctly.
If safety is a concern side curtain air bags were optional from 03-07, standard starting in 08.
Otherwise they're pretty similar to what you'd look for in a 3rd gen. Check the suspension for worn components, look for leaks around the engine, and other signs of abuse/neglect.

yep I dont want head gasket issues.I had read at one site that the 2003 to early 2005 had the issue. your saying 2006 had the issue too ? this one build date is 05/2005
wonder if there is a listing someplace that says what date the redesigned head gaskets went in.
i really dont need to get rid of a problem 3rd gen only to get a problem 4th gen

so researching this head gasket issue......is this engine an interfence engine....meaining valves can hit pistons....the 3rd gen was not.
reason I ask is in another thread on this forum someone said if doing the headgaskets then do the chain too, as if it gets too loose or skips then the valves can hit t he pistons and total the engine
I also read that the block is aluminum and cant be rebuilt....again on this forum

Toyota changed the gaskets in late 2005 so a 2006 build should be fine. Here's 60+ pages of head gasket fun.

Just have to stick to budget and im kind of running out of time. Short summers here, lots of miles I need to do over the next few months. ( like 4 trips that are each about 800 miles) Slim pickings up here.

Someone needs to put together a sticky thread titled 'Buyers Guide'. I don't think this actually exists. Maybe I'll do it at some point.
@ y=mx+b
?
Trim package differences and basic V8/V6/4WD/AWD/2WD explanations and things to look for. The usuals, head gasket, rust, CDL/4X4 function, exhaust manifold cracks.

Yes, some of the early 06 had the issue too. November of 2005 I believe is the general timeframe everyone agreed that the change happened during. I strayed from a few 06s because they were early build dates.

I've never heard of a timing chain snapping on the 4.0. I wouldn't worry about this since it's a chain instead of a belt. If the chain snapped you'd be that one in a million type failure.

Any 05 V6 would be suspect in my book. I think the head gasket failures are not as common as they are made out to be on the forum, but there is clearly a problem with those early V6 models.
I can imagine it is hard to find these in good shape in Alaska... They sell in about a day down here in good shape. I bought my 08 V6 4x4 Limited the day after it was posted the night before. I tried to buy an 07 sport the day before but it got sold before they could even post pictures of it and answer a few of my questions.
Basically if you see one you want come ready to make a deal right then. Especially if it's something that been resembles a decent price.
If you don't mind doing the timing belt on the V8, slightly worse MPG, and the exhaust manifold problem you can look at any year of V8 and be trouble free relatively. The exhaust manifold thing isn't a reliability concern, more of a nuisance. The only other thing to really look out for there is the air injection pump on the 05+ going out and causing damage. The V8 is an extremely reliable engine, as are the later V6 models, or an early V6 with new head gaskets.

I can look into putting something together as well. Possibly pool our information from a few people and get a mega, all inclusive, Buyers guide going. Specific stuff like you mentioned, and lots of pictures.
I'll plug away at some stuff and see where I get. If anyone gets to this first, I'll be happy to share my HTML code for the basic directory system that works on t4r. Would be especially helpful for a buyers guide, as there would be a lot of information.
