Right in front of your main rad, it's a little radiator about 1 foot square. It think it's more on the driver's side of centre. If it's there, you can't miss it. I thought all 4Runners had them? Maybe just in Canada?

They are standard on the V8 with the 7000# towing limit

Everyone should get one regardless of whether or not they tow. It extends the life of the tranny. Cheap insurance.

i asked the service manager (actual manager, not some schlep who has 'manager' on his/her name tag) at the local toyota dealer if i had one. he said that they only come on 4runners with the optional tow package. i then checked to see whether there was even a tow package option. there wasn't, but i do have the cooler - typical service manager i guess, speak some b.s. and hope the customer falls for it.

It's amazing how some of these guys are so uninformed about their own product. That's how I ended up with no roof rack - the salesman told me it was standard. When my truck did not show up with the rack, he denied ever telling me that.
My understanding is that on the 2004s, the tow package is standard. That includes the cooler. This is in Canada. Not sure about the U.S.

It was standard equipment in the U.S. when I bought my 2004, at least on the V8s, the only options listed on the window sticker of my truck were roof rack and floor/cargo mats.

The little oil cooler in front of the radiator the engine oil cooler, not the tranny.
The tranny has oil line running into the radiator itself, it is on the passenger side. I think it has a self contained unit within the side tank of the radiator for oil to water cooling. CHeck for yourself on the side, see pics below. First one shows connections on radiator highlighted in red. Second pics is a bit out of focus but you can read A/T oil on it. This is actually where they tap into the system to flush the tranny oil.
I believe all V8's had it not sure about the V6, but I think they have it as well.
You dont really need an extra tranny oil cooler with this system, unless you plan on towing heavy loads up steep hills in hot weather. Rather just have it flushed every 30K miles or so. I had mine flushed at the dealer at 20K, make sure they put the right ATF fluid in. I might put in Amsoil after the warranty expires at 60K or so, but till then it is Toyota ATF type IV for me and the 2004 is ATF WS I believe.

According to the Toyota Canada 2004 4Runner brochure, the V8 models have both a transmission and oil cooler.

Help me out here with this post. I am looking at a PDF manual for the 03 V8 4runner.
Your post starts off by saying "The little oil cooler in front of the radiator the engine oil cooler, not the tranny." then the next paragraph indicates the tranny has an oil line running into the radiator.
Hmmm. This may be the case, but the toyota manual shows only one tranny oil cooler and this sits in front of the radiator itself. So does that mean that an 03-05 V8 has two transmission oil coolers (one in the radiator and one sitting right infront of the radiator)
Now, is there an additional small cooler (similar in size to the tranny cooler) wich is designed to cool down the ENGINE oil?
The reason why I ask is while I was doing an oil change, I noticed that there are two ports on the housing where the oil filter screws onto. These ports have removable bolts (which when removed oil spills out). Now the pdf calls this specific piece a "ENGINE OIL COOLER" but there are lines poking out of it. Now do those lines lead anywhere. I must also add that the two ports that I can see on the spacer/block looking attachment identified on the IPB as # 3 that the actual oil filter screws onto has two flush ports vs two ports that have arms extending outwards like in the picture (the picture is for an 03 V8 vs my 05 V8).
Now, are those arms the in and out lines for the oil filter itself. Thats great if they are... but then what the hell are the two ports that are capped off for?
Help? Perhaps I am just having a brain overload, I know I have a blistering headache, but cripe... I am confused.
BTW, I have an 05 V8 FWD Sprt.

Just about all vehicles with an automatic transmission have a cooling circuit with lines to the radiator. There is a small coil tube inside the radiator tank which the fluid passes through and is 'cooled' by the water in the radiator. In heavy duty applications, they often add an additional air cooled finned mini radiator type cooler which is plumbed inline with the radiator cooler. Usually, this additional cooler is placed on the output side of the normal radiator circuit, so the fluid comming from the radiator cooler is then cooled additionally by the add-on unit. You will usually find them mounted near the radiator, but sometimes they are mounted on the fender well in the engine compartment.

That's it below the horns
Tranny fluid runs through both the radiator & the external cooler.
The oil filter mount is water cooled.
Another straight line, running across the bottom of the radiator, is the power steering cooler.

V8 = engine oil and tranny coolers.
V6 = engine oil cooler only.

The V8's trans is cooled/looped through the large rad and the external rad in front (right) of the main (large) rad. That is not an oil cooler. The oil cooler is shown by Prozac, part # 3 in the diagram, which is on the V6 and V8. The V6 only uses the trans cooler that goes through the main (large) rad.
