You can, but you shouldn't. First of all, the chain itself shouldn't really need to be changed. A timing chain, unlike a timing belt doesn't have a defined service interval. That said, our engines get to high enough mileage, you may be right to do a replacement.

If you replace the timing chain, do it with OEM parts only. The timing belt or chain is one of those things that if it breaks, it will grenade your engine. It's also a doable job, but a lot of hours of work. The last thing you want to do is spend a day to day and a half wrenching and blow up your engine because you used a 70$ kit instead of a 200$ kit.

Having just done timing chains while doing my head gasket job ...

I can tell you the dealer cost is about $300 for just the chains (that was my wholesale cost). In my opinion it is worth every penny. There is no way I would do all the work to put in ebay parts. You're looking at a fair amount of coin for all dealer chains, guides and tensioner but it's the route you should go if what you're looking for is to extend the life of your vehicle.

As mentioned above there is no need to replace the chains unless you're having a timing issue or the mileage is so high you are getting concerned think 300k miles + .... I only did mine because I was in there already and I had to mill the heads .008" which compounds any stretch the chains may have had at 200k.

I have a mileage of 130K and have an error P 0016.
And there are no original kits.
And according to experience, only a large chain stretches or does everything need to be changed?
