FJ Coil Lift, Which Spacers & Top Hats to use, FJ or T4R ? Thanks

I will be doing a lift with the typical FJ coils and 5100's front and rear. I did search and read 80 pages of the compiled FJ lift thread but didn't see an answer to my questions. In order to end up with a level ride I'm told I need to use a 1.5 spacer on the rear coils. Do I order spacers for the FJ or for the T4R? I was surprised that the T4R spacers are 2 to 3 times more than the FJ's. I assume when it comes to the new top hats I need to use the ones for an FJ correct? I want to take my front coils and struts to a shop that can assemble them for me so I don't have to mess around with the coil compressors.

Also is there any brand of spacer or top hats that's better than another, any brands to avoid? I have seen spacers made from aluminum, poly urethane and rubber, which material to you suggest? Thanks for your advice and have a great day.

If you want a level ride, I'd recommend avoiding spacers in the rear.

If you're doing OEM FJ springs, front and rear, I would mount the front springs with the 5100s at the second setting (.85"). FJ rear springs will only give you about .5" or so of lift. FJ front springs with 5100 on the 2nd setting will give you around ~2.25" or so.

edit - the front also depends on if your truck is a v6 or v8. You can subtract about .5" from the front with a v8.

My plan is to set the fronts on the 3rd setting for the max lift and that's why I was going to add the 1.5 spacers to the rear. I have read 80 plus pages of the FJ compiled thread and multiple people have done what I was planning and said the 1.5 spacers were needed for a level ride otherwise you will end up nose high which is the last thing I want. I just need to know which ones to order? I will be doing UCA's, Diff Drop, End Links for sway bars, new tie rods and new SS brake line while I have it torn apart. Thanks

Make sure you dont install the front lower coil seat upside down.
Dont need the diff drop.
Rear sway bar=longer links
Front sway bar=relocate kit.
Probably dont NEED ext. Rear SS brake lines.
Any 1.5" rear coil spacer would work... most seem to then just swap the rear coils eventually.

Your money spend as you want...just saying.
Have fun!

Thank you for the reply and advice. I have heard some say the diff drop is needed, others say it isn't. It seems like many do it just because it's cheap and feel it's better to be safe than sorry. I planned on doing the front sway bar relocation plates and if I am correct you are saying that the stock end links for the front can be used without much preload if I use the relocation plate that moves it forward?

As for the rear end links I was planning on using a pair of end links from Moog or ProForged made for 2nd Gen 4Runner which are an inch longer than the 4th Gen end links. If I can use the 1.5 spacers made for an FJ on the rear coils, which are FJ coils, it would save some money. I was surprised that they were that much cheaper than the 4Runner spacers. Does this also mean that I can use the top hats made for the FJ Cruiser or should I use the top hats made for the 4Runner? I have seen to many pics of the stock top hats having a worn out hole in the center. Using new top hats also means that I can have a shop near me assemble the coilovers which will speed up replacement.

Thanks again for the info and advice. Any other advice anyone can give is welcomed.

Front swaybar relocate with stock links, yes.
2nd gen rear links work great, thats what i use.

The tophats are the same fjc/4runner and the 5th gen t4r should work.
Rear coil spacer is the same fjc/t4r.

As far as the tophat getting wallowed out by the shock shaft, seems to be from improper install...missing the little rubber/poly bushing under the tophat.
Might could use your old tophats if in good shape.

Still have ext. rear brake lines and diff drop sitting in my "todo" box...for many years now.

Final thought.
While your in there you may want to add a 1/4" spacer on top of the driver side front tophat...to help with the lean to the driver side these things seem to have.

The FJ front coils are 1/4" taller on the drivers side to account for the lean. Is the 1/4" spacer still needed as this is the first I'm hearing this. The FJ coils have paint codes that make IDing which side the coil goes on very clear. Thanks again for the info. If I need the spacer I will get one, I hope to tear it down once. I'm also replacing the upper and lower control arms from Freedom Off Road. The suspension is 15 years old and after 147k miles the ball joints must be getting tired.

Defiantly put the longer coils on the driver side.
I had the Moog FJC front coils for a bit.
I put the long one on the driverside...still had the lean.

Seems like these lean all different with different years and models.

Post up some pics when yougetrdone.
Have fun and good luck, hope its all smooth sailing to you.

Thanks for your help with this. I'm going to go ahead and pickup the 1/4 spacer for the drivers side that way I have it if it's needed. I will for sure be posting pics when it's done and I get some new tread on. The control arms from Freedom are back ordered until mid August, so I have some time before the work begins.
