Oil not changed in almost 23 months

Hi everyone, i know this is crazy for most of you. I have never tried this before but my oil is now in the engine for 23 months. the last time i changed it is september of 2019. i don't drive it that much but i'm at 8000 miles on that last oil change. i just wanted to see if every 10000 miles are okay no matter how long it's been.

by the way, i'll be changing my oil soon and i will have the oil tested for everyone to see. once again, this is for science experiment purposes so please be nice.

I’ll be following this thread.

I just changed my oil in June after exactly two years, but I had only driven 3,000 miles. Before COVID, every 5,000 miles (~twice a year) with Toyota filter and Mobil 1 since I’ve owned my 4th gen. I’ve never had my oil tested but, so far, no oil-related problems (knock on wood). I’m at 180k miles now.

I’ve read on this forum that fuel and water can contaminate the oil over time.

Yeah, I think Covid has changed a lot of our maintenance schedules. I only drive mine twice a week now but I try and make sure I put 10-20 miles on each time to get it up to temp good because of the condensation issue with the oil.
Acids can form and start eating on your bearings, like cancer, you don't know until too late. I'll change mine at a year, regardless of mileage.

Yeah, working from home and owning 3 cars means my 4Runner barely got to 3k miles over the last year. I went about 14 months in between oil changes in those 3k miles.

Normally I would wait 5k miles with full synthetic. This time I did conventional since I assume I'll be changing sooner than 5k miles.

Oil changes are cheap compared to engine replacement.

If it hasn't done loads of short trips that cause condensation to build up, I can't see the harm.

Modern oil is so good that I wouldn't be worried, and that's saying something!

I'm due to change the oil in our 4Runner in ~200 miles (fwiw, doing 6k intervals based on blackstone reports), but it was just changed a few months ago. Of two cars, the majority of the mileage gets put on the 4Runner.

That said, I just changed the oil in our other car the other day and realized it had been a year and a few days since the last change. Which reminds me I gotta send that into Blackstone. I'll report back if there's any red flags.

Wouldn't really worry too much running full synth unless you're doing a lot of short trips or something over the year.

Even if you dont drive it, the changes in weather will cause condensation in your engine. The water will eat at the internals because any oil that coated the engine have long drained off.

The rule is 5-10,000 miles or every 12 months
